trans slips only on left turns. any ideas?
 

hello guys. ive got a rather confusing problem with the new PA. the transmission only slips on left handed turns, and for about the first 50 feet after turning left. ive also noticed it occasionally will bang shift into 3rd. its very random (both the turning slippage and the 3rd gear bang shift)


ive scanned it and its not throwing the 1811 (max shift adjust) or any codes for that matter. it looks like its got new axles also.

80% of the time, the shifts are butter smooth. shifts as well as my dads with 75k on it. in fact, unless im looking at the rpm and listening to the exhaust i cant even feel the shifts.


previous owner said he changed the fluid 6k before i bought it as per dealer maintenance recommendation. fluid looks great, proper level and isnt foamy or leaking.

i am thinking shift kit and a shift solenoid. any other ideas?

But why only left turns? That is what gets me. I would want to drop the pan to look for fluid pickup issues. Also it may not be a bad idea for a half pint overfill, assuming the dipstick can be trusted, and you are checking the fluid correctly

Exchanging the trans fluid is always a good idea. The prior owner may of paid for it, but did the work actually get performed? Was the fluid exchanged with some non-conforming bulk DEX III or did they use GM licensed DEX VI?

Consider exchanging the trans fluid as a first step. You can do a two exchange siphone process which you don't even need a wrench to perform, and will cost you about $50 if you get your DEX VI at Wal-Mart.

Agree, check for filter errors such as mounting or a cracked gasket or 0-rings. Double check your fluid level, might want to compare dipstick lengths. Ive seen some people just throw one in.

Serious doubt, the kind of fluid would have any affect on taking a left turn, and not a right turn......

Usually, when taking a turn causes a "concern", it's because fluid level is too low...but you say it is ok....like the guys have suggested, it could be the connection at the filter.....

Seriously doubt a shift kit or solenoid would solve the problem....

well, he claims it was done at the dealer. i have no paperwork to back that up. plenty of brake job paperwork though. lol.

what gets me is how freakin smooth this car shifts. my old car feels like a bang shifting beast compared to this one.

thats why im so confused. only left turns, and only occasionally banging going into 3rd. i noticed today it bang shifts going into 3rd more if you are just hovering over the 32mph shift point.

Has been experienced by others, myself included. As suggested, needs more transmission fluid; I added a bottle of Lubeguard Red...I think that's 8 or 10 ounces.

well, in that case i may as well swap it. seeing as ive just discovered there is a trans leak anyway (i suspect its one of the cooler lines). any info on that two exchange siphon process?

I gather that you siphon until no more comes out, refill, run it around, and then do it again. You can usually get clear tubing at the hardware store cheap enough.

Why put in new fluid if its just going to leak out?

Top it off correctly and see if it fixes your left turn issue. If it doesn't, you know you have other issues to worry about without spending $40 in trans fluid.
