Fuel gauge reading low after new pump

Fuel gauge reading low after new pump
About 2 weeks ago, had new fuel pump installed on my 1999 Buick LeSabre. Yesterday, gas gauge read right at 1/4 tank or slightly below. Trip-odometer = 295 miles. Based on how much gas it took (10.4 gal), the gauge should have read higher... closer to 1/2 tank. It'* not off by a lot, but reading deceptively low. Any idea as to why this is might be? After fill-up, gauge went back to full. No problems with gauge before this. Anyone know why this might be?

There are little fingers on the sender assembly and most likely the disturbance doing the fuel pump caused some of them to break off. Sorry..it'* fuel sender time.
Look at it the way I did. It'* already been out and none of the bolts will fight. I had mine out 5 times.. you'd have though I had it in with velcro.

Is that a big deal? I understand they had to drop the fuel tank to replace the pump. We had to take it back a second time due to fumes/minor leak, which seems fixed now. But I hate the thought of them messing with that area again. I read somewhere that it may be a "dead spot" and that the gauge will read wrong when it hits that spot. Is that right?

Could be.. if so then some techron fuel cleaner may help. If the fingers that ride the resistor break off.. they are gone and you'll be lucky to read a lot.

Fumes seem to be back, but not as strong as before. Here'* the chronology:
1) shop replaced pump/OEM part (3 wks ago)
2) filled tank (a week later)
3) noticed small spot and smelled gas
4) took back to shop, "repaired leak at filter" (1 wk ago)
5) seemed OK (no smell)
6) filled tank again (3 days ago)
7) notice slight gasoline smell but no visible leak (now)
Looking at possibly having to replace the sender... but also worried about the fumes. It'* driving us crazy. They seem to come and go.
Any ideas about what'* going on??
