Default Opinions on Using PF47 or PF52 Oil Filter

The PF47 is the standard length filter that cames on the car and the PF52 is an extended version of the PF47 that was used on Blazers and Jimmys.

The PF52 has the advantage of being larger, so it has a larger filtering area. That should decrease oil pressure drop across the filter and allow it to collect more debris before clogging (not that it should ever get to that point). It also holds more oil and I was able to get almost 5 qts of Mobil1 in instead of the usual 4.5 qts to full.

Because it'* so long, it seems to stick down below the subframe a very small amount (less than a 1/2 inch) That reall worries me because it could very easily puncture if I (god forbid) ran something over in the middle of the road and I'd loose all oil pressure (not good).

Maybe I could carry a spare PF47 and 5 qts of oil with me all the time?

What do you use and why? Standard length or extended filter? Have you know any problems using the PF47 that would warrent using the PF52? Has anyone had a problem using the PF52 because of its length? If your using the longer filter, please tell me how much it sticks down on your car and if you've ever hit anything with it.

i personally never used the extended filter, but it was on my 90se when i bought it, and it had not problems with it, when i changed the oil i went back to the 47 and used that.

either would work ok but keep in mind, gm did design the car to use the 47. using anything else might cause you problems. id say just stick to the 47.

I know a lot of the regal guys were running this one when I had mine and I don't think anyone had any issues with running it. As stated, it just means there is more oil in the system, and it shouldn't hurt the flow at all. Pressure should stay relatively the same.

I've been running the PF52 equivalent for quite some time in my '91 88 and the wife'* '03 Venture without any problems.

I'm mostly worried about the length of the filter. The longer one probably won't hurt anything, but if some road debris hits it, goodbye filter. Has anyone been running the longer filter for a while? If so, has it held up well?

Does the filter stick down past the bottom of the car at any point in your 88, even if it'* just a little bit? I've seen ventures, and the filter'* tucked away up in front of the radiator, where it'* protected. I get nurvous running a filter so close to the ground, but I really want the bigger one because of the positives I listed above.

I have run the PF52 filter in 5 3800 powered cars. I have never had an issue where the filter struck anything. I live in New York City so I would know if there was a clearance issue.

Nope. On my car, the filter is directly above the right side engine cradle and the PF52'* don't even come close to the top of the cradle.
