Default Alternator-High Output at idle Please!

My 97 PK Ave is about to under go some mods. First will come a custom alternator from Quality power featuring 110amps at idle and 160 amp max for my small case CS-130D. Then I will find some bright fog lights to compliment my highway driving and much needed lower road illumination.
The J mount left order has been placed with Quality power: GM CS130D high output replacement alternator
Even with an Odyssey battery under the hood: ODYSSEY Batteries I find the stock GM alts insufficient at idle in most situations where you can see your headlights dimming while stopped in traffic. (voltage droops) to 11.6. With brake lights, headlights on, heater & defogger, wipers etc on, I somehow believe that even with voltage sensor mods that the draw exceeds 60 amps easily and the only solution is to order the higher amp alternator. Not available from the shelves it seems, 105 amp GM'* simply dont cut it. Is the stock Delco alt even putting out 50 amps at idle?
I look forward in replacing this after market POS. I guess the previous owner installed this Automotive systems alternator, too cheap to get the correct Delco part. I think the small case Delco were still only 105- amp max for this car.
By bye to this one shortly....

Will update with the new PHOTOS OF the Quality power Alt once it is installed and comments on performance at idle once it is installed!

I've wanted to upgrade my alternator for some time, I was going to get a high amp conversion kit due to the stereo system I had in the car, and due to the lights dimming when I was stopped, or at low RPM'*.
I wanted to have a 200A bridge rectifier, and a 200A stator, but I got rid of my system, so I do not really have the need for it now.

I am pretty sure that dimming comes from the alternator output being proportional to RPM'*, and alternator temperature.

I have heard the CS130'* were not that reliable, so most choose to go with the CS144, the voltage regulators used in them are the same, you may need a D1-W1206 adapter though, I hear the CS144 cools itself better, so it lasts longer.
And it is supposed to be a direct fit.

Extreme Duty CS-144 type Alternator, High output, Heavy Duty Alternator

I am looking forward to hearing how it goes Art!

With the additional amp draw, look at lowering the gauge of your wiring. You can put a monster alternator in there, but the wire has to have the ability to deliver the amps. Reducing wire lengths and lowering the gauge of wires are two ways of increasing the deliver-ability of amps.

Great tips Michael!

I wonder what the specs are on the current factory wiring used?

My factory pos/neg cables seem to be very thick but not sure what ga.
I do not think that the cs-144 will fit the 97PA. It is an internally cooled late model small case cs-130 with a 3 bolt particular mount unfortunately. According to Quality power the only thing that mounts up as a direct bolt on is what I ordered as this alt only worked for 97-98 models.
I do agree that installing larger diameter cables is a real benefit, just not sure I need them as I only run the stock stereo and my for light install will be 10ga marine grade tin copper (Ancor) install with relay/ fused switch.
I knew I was going to have to do this mod also because I went up 1.6 watt in each bulb in the rear of the PA. Ya its brighter ..way brighter but the draw is larger while stopped.

I think with the new high idle alt my problems will be solved.
More wattage in the cottage soon!

That site says the following.

""Direct mounting to the older style CS-130 as well as the newer style CS-130D type Alternators.""

""You can see the difference. With the Extreme Duty Dual Rectifier Alternator you get more output, more durability, and a longer lifespan. A direct fit from your old style CS-130 and the newer CS-130D type Alternators.""

""1995-present vehicles that currently have the CS-130D or AD-230 alternators must use the D1-W1206 adapter""

""Direct fit to the following popular Lester numbers:
7802, 7861, 7864, 7894, 7901, 7918, 7921, 7977, 8103, 8112, 8160, 8163, 8165, 8172, 8173, 8203, 8206, 8216, 8219, 8221, 8227, 8231 ""

Being externally cooled is what helps them stay cooler from what I understand, and like I said the voltage regulator is the same, so all you'd need to do is get that wiring adapter to go from a square end, to a round end plug.
The pulleys have the same belt rib patten.

If it is not actually a direct bolt on, then the only thing it does not have would be the alternator brace that comes from the left rear, I know I seen a modifiable one sold somewhere, I'll see if I can find out for sure if that is what is missing.
I do know my CS-144 is a 3 bolt alternator, and I am willing to bet the CS130D would fit my bolt pattern.

The Quality Power new alternator has arrived!
Checked it over and wires on back are identical and case/mounting is a perfect bolt in.

Next is find another new belt and the time to install it.
Will update performance/results once installed.

Default Update:

High output Alternator to be installed on Tues AM with new serpentine belt.
The new Alt has a quarter inch smaller diameter pulley (inside measurement with calipers) this should also make it easier to get that 110 amps at idle happening.
I consulted a local starter/ALT & wiring specialist today regarding the wiring.
They found the current wire from ALT to under hood fuse bus to be insufficient and outside shielding worn & hot (CRAPOLA) My plan is good to go according them. Therefore I am building the new wire that will run from the back of the ALT directly to the battery using 4GA Ancor Marine grade tin copper wire. Will also in the middle somewhere use a 200AMP wafer fuse that I found locally for pick up tomorrow am. Will post a pic of the new wire & soldered/heat shrink tubed, terminal ends once it is assembled.

Default Went with 2 Gauge Ancor for ALt to battery wire!

I checked the specs on different gauge wire and when hot the 2 GA was more acceptable to the 200 + amp range.
I found a Wirez 200 amp wafer ANL fuse and clear waterproof holder for this application at a local high end stereo shop for $33 tax in.

Custom cut and now trial fitted it is ready for install with the new 110 amp idle 160 amp max alternator!

Hopefully Tues I can post back results with new ALT & Wiring with a voltage report under load.
