Hello all and thanks for allowing me to be a member here,

I have a 1996 Buick Riviera. It started blowing fuel pump fuses. I just bought the car about 3 months ago and it blew the 1st fuse after about 500 miles. Now its more like every few miles. Now it seems like when I press on the gas pedal it hesitates sometimes. I have popped 3 fuses in the last 5 days. If anyone knows what may be causing this I would really appreciate the info.. This has been driving me crazy.. The motor is a supercharged 3.8


I had to go from Cincinnati to SW Indiana Drove ( 270 miles ) The 1st 230 miles I had no problem at all. Then it snapped a fuse in town in a parking lot as I was getting ready to leave, Replaced the fuse and I drove another 30 - 40 miles the fuse snapped at 55 MPH. I put a new fuse in, I replaced the fuel pump fuse but now when I turn the key on it blows the fuse instantly. I dont think its the pump, The car drove great and it didnt hesitate, miss and had great power the whole time.

And ideas are appreciated. I think by this takes my mind that it isnt the pump and there is a short somewhere between the fuel pump and fuel pump fuse that is popping.

This may be the culprit but not sure I have a feeling it may be the Ignition Control Module.. I read that the fuel pump and Ignition control module are on the same fuse - can anyone help verify this? I have been looking and cannot verify this yet. But fingers are crossed

Someone also mentioned the Fuel pump control module that is in the trunk.

motors of all kinds draw more current as they wear out. now that its always blowing its easy to find. just unplug the things on the circuit until it doesnt blow the fuse. if it still does with everything disconnected its in the wiring somewhere.

Thanks for the reply.I just ruled out the fuel pump. I removed the wiring harness to the pump and tex=sted a new fuse. The fuse blew when I turned the key on. So it isnt the pump. Is there any other items that can be disconnected and tested? Thanks for any help.

unfortunately i dont have a wiring diagram for that car. that other post said the ign.control module was on the same circuit.

yeah I ruled that out as well I disconnected the ICM ( Ignition control module ) And replaced fuse and it popped when I turned the key.. So its not that. Still looking.

Problem solved as seen in the other thread. It was a fauly fuel pump relay car is runnign smooth as normal. Hope it stays that way

Actually the car acted up again. Now blowing fuses with fuel pump relay in or out.

BUT I put car in shop and turned out being the crankshaft position sensor wire laying on the harmonic balancer. car so far is running again.. maybe that was causing the relay to act up? I am not sure but its running for now.

Also whatever was causing that may have been causing the chime not working when have the keys in the ignition or leave the lights on. They are now working. So hope its working without any more issues

Glad to hear it'* fixed, Dave. That was one not many people I talk to had run into. The Riviera has a rather complicated electrical system but when everything is happy, it is very reliable. Here'* hoping for many trouble free miles.
