Default a few questions about disabling auto lights

hey guys. i havent really found a clear model specific answer for my car. what i want to do is disable the automatic lights, but only sometimes. so what im trying to figure out is if my sensor works off of resistance, or it just completes the circuit? because if you pop it out of the dash, its in permanent darkness as far as the car is concerned. ive been reading for the past few days on and off, and i have read where someone just wrapped the sensor in aluminum foil to bridge the connection, and others where they used resistors.

the reason i want to do this (coupled with the drl delete i suppose) is its getting around xmas time, and as corny as this sounds, the gf said she wants to go to one of those dumb x-mas lights drive through displays. and atleast in indiana they dont let you in with your lights on. so really, other than that and drive in movies next year thats the only time i need this to work. i like my automatic headlights, but there is no override out of park. so if anyone knows if the sensor works off of resistance, and even better what resistance it is at daylight that would be awesome.

also, if anyone knows how to disable drl without duplicating the drl delete option (which involves alot of soldering and wire cutting which im trying to avoid) that would be great. thanks alot!

Your headlight switch doesn't work at night? I had that problem with my 2001 Camaro. As far as I know, if you disable the auto on, then you will always have to control them manually. That'* how it was on the Camaro.

I had to wire a 4.7k ohm resistor in place of the sensor in my car. The directions i found said to cut the wires at the bcm, which is easily accessible in my car, which makes it easy to reverse if needed.

hmm. if you could find the tut for your car that would be awesome. i dont imagine they'* be much different. it'd atleast give me an idea lol.

as far as the disabling the headlights with the switch, i cant if im in any gear but park. you turn em off in park by sliding the twilight sentinel slider all the way to off and theres a spring at the end. but when you shift from park they pop back on and you cant turn em off. and when you start the car they pop on every time. which is really annoying to other people at the drive in'* here because you park on a really steep hill and your lights are aimed directly at the screen. and my h.i.d'* are 6000k.. so i start my car to turn on the air or whatever and over half the screen turns white lol. its only for a few seconds but in my book its still an ******* thing to do.

im tempted to just download a flashlight app to my ipod and set it on blue and just set it on the sensor, and unhook the brights so the drl doesn't light up lol.

Have you tried to see if you set your parking brake one click if that kills the lights?

Also, when my lights come on at night, I can move the switch to the parking lights and the headlights go out.

i wouldve reccomennded the same but watching his drift video when he hit his park brake to slide they didnt shut off so it must not apply to pa'*

well, in the century that only applies if you set the parking brake before starting the car... but if i remember correctly mine doesn't do that. with how little ill actually need it i might just experiment with unhooking the brights and getting a flashlight app. it figures that the park ave is the only one without some type of override. most gm'* either have a sequence with the dome light button or the parking brake or something like that. but not the park ave :/ just skimmed through the entire owners manual and it just says you can override them in park but out of park they come on for safety. ive read a few places that you can put a switch on the parking switch in the column but there were a bunch of drawbacks to it and honestly i dont want to risk making my car inop because i might bother other people.

If you are in drive, and switch off the twilight sentinel, does that do it? Supposedly that gets it while parked.

I agree on the park lights though, that is probably the safest and easiest solution on all counts.

I found this for the 2001.. I'm not sure if its the same in your 99

2001 Buick Park Avenue - disable auto headlights.
  1. Remove the light sensor. It is located on the top of the dashboard, in the center, near the bottom of the windshield. The top is round, approximately 1/2-inch in diameter, with a smaller translucent circle in the inside. It can be pried out rather easily with a screw driver.
  2. Immediately below the top of the light sensor assembly is attached the actual sensor, a small metal disc which looks not unlike a thick watch battery. From the disc come two small wires, on opposite sides.
  3. When the sensor senses light, it completes the circuit, connecting the two wires. When it does not sense light, it breaks the circuit, triggering the automatic night-time lights. To disable those automatic lights, permanently connect the two wires. I did this by taking speaker wire and attaching an end to each of the wires coming from the sensor. Soldering them is probably a good idea as well. Once those two wires are connected below the sensor, it doesn't matter what the sensor does: the circuit will always be completed. And a completed circuit in this case equals daytime, as far as the lights are concerned.
  4. After the wiring is secure, put the sensor assembly back in its spot. It'* oriented a certain way, so you may have to rotate it until it goes back in. Once it'* oriented properly, just push it back in until the top is flush with the top of the dashboard. If you complete these steps as well as the steps for disabling DRLs, you will actually be able to decide yourself when you want your lights on.
  5. I haven't noticed any unintended consequences, but I will update if I do.

It seems straight-forward enough.

i remembered reading thaat someplace and stuck a penny in the slot where the sensor pops in yesterday.. the car started and they were off for about 20 seconds, at which point the car dinged at me 3 times and kicked the lights on. ill have to get a scrap of wire and try that. i really wanna do the wiring for the drl delete too but its too much work to string together 2 250ft extension cords from the apartment to the car so i can solder lol.

this is my idea for how to do it without modifying the car. only id unhook the brights. i made this video a long time ago.i tried it with the flashlight after i made this video and it just fell down. which is why i was trying to avoid it.

ignore my redundancy. im not very good at talking behind a camera or editing vids back then apparently lol.
