With my 96' Park Ave I went with a single DIN, and used an adapter kit that gave me a little cubby hole where the other DIN space used to be, it does not look too bad, but I think a double DIN unit would be the best choice.
The steering wheel controls can be retained, but you will have to do some splicing into wires, and possibly a little programming once it is installed, here is a link to what I am talking about, don't buy it though, as it may not be the right one, you need to select the head unit first, then you can better assure it is compatible.
Amazon.com: Axxess Metra ASWC-1 Universal Steering Wheel Control Interface with New Micro B Connector (Black): Car Electronics

With the heads unit, are there any features you need, or want to have that you do not have now?
For example, to play DVD'*, have a backing up camera that displays on the unit, or GPS navigation.

If you want to get an idea of what is available, check out Crutchfields site, you can enter your car info, then see what is available, then find what you want somewhere cheaper, as they are a little overpriced.

sonic electronics is a good spot to look, they give you the mounting and wiring adapters free too, and normally pretty good on the other adapters

thanks guys ive been looking at this particular model on crutchfield,
JVC KW-R500 CD receiver at Crutchfield.com

i dont really want a touch screen or anything and i have no need for navigation or a dvd player, all i want is a good head unit in which ill be able to retain the steering controls, plug in an ipod and a subwoofer.

dont know about canada. i think for as much as those control adapters are i will just reach over or use the remote. i have the steering controls on my bonnie and on my monte, i dont drive the bonnie but if i did it would be changed because i hit them all the time. i had the stock radio in the monte about a week and must have inadvertently changed source about 50 times. i dont care much for those buttons. the only vehicle i had that it would have been nice is the old 89 pickup i had because you had to lean over quite a bit to reach but the after market radio has a remote and that was good enough

Crutchfield only ships to any of the 50 U.*. states, or Puerto Rico.
Crutchfield Shipping Details

There are not a lot of good places to get electronics from Canada, not that I know of anyway, I was able to find one place, they only have 2 decks around that price, but both are decent brands.

Your best bet if you get it online is most likely going to be E-Bay, you will pay a lot more than US prices, because of shipping and import fees, but that cannot really be avoided.

EDIT: Did not know Crutchfield had a Canada site, good find Travis!

Also, welcome to to the GM Forums Vlad, when I posted I did not notice it was your first post.
