Default apparently neither me or my dad are getting the right mpg, any suggestions?

ok, so in my intro thread rjolly87 said his dad in his 97 park ave ultra got 24 mpg going 95. mine and my dads both get 18 doing 80. theyre both the same year and same options, and i couldnt go downhill doing 80 and get 24 mpg haha. the only mod to my car is i removed all the innards of my airbox today. im not sure what kind of mpg'* that will add but it makes the car sound alot more throaty while im getting into the pedal. keep in mind that the mods i do need to be cheap. ive got no money haha. i make my money mowing lawns and theres a good gap between lawns and leaves, and leaves and snow haha. not to mention 15 gallons costs me about $40 haha. so basically any mpg increasers are greatly appreciated. tires are at 30-35 psi, and i had to work to get my car at 19-19.5 mpg city. by work i mean adjust my driving habits. so that cant get much better haha.

any help is greatly appreciated!

How old are the spark plugs, plug wires, and coils? If these are old you will have a weaker spark and less power, that gives you lower MPG.

Some places to start:

When was the last tuneup?
What oxygen sensors does the car have? How old are they?
Condition of air filter?
What type of gas do you guys use?
It is my understanding that this figure you are looking at is being given by the DIC, if that is the case, have you checked the average for a tank verses actual consumption figures?
What kind of power does the car have? Is it sluggish? Missing?
Is your Service Engine Soon light on?

Just some basic places to start.

as far as the airfilter it looks new not dirty at all. wires were replaced a month ago dic kinda confuses me. i ran out of gas at 17.3 gallons after filling to the first click of the pump.... i put a gallon in, drove to a gasstation and it took 18. anything else about the car i dont know, ive owned it since january. but what are the odds of 2 cars with completely different mileage getting the exact same mpg? and as for gas we both use regular at speedway.
