Default Lower Intake Gasket Replacement

I'm about to replace the lower intake gasket on my 97 LeSabre Custom. It is leaking coolant on the passenger side, where the thick silicon gasket meets the block. Do I have to remove the upper from the lower? Is there a step by step guide anywhere? Can I get some guidance here?

If it has the 3.8l, 3800 engine the upper has to come off.

From what your saying, it'* not your gaskets are leaking. It'* the coolant elbow. You can change just that by pulling the alternator bracket. The elbows are like $5 or so at auto parts stores. Take about an hour.

it is a 3.8 series II, it could be the elbow. Is that the formal name for the part? do I need any "O" rings or sealant for it?

I took the alternator mount off and when I removed the elbow from the intake, it was broken off where the O-ring should be. I stuck my finger in the hole and came out with a wrinkled O ring. I guess the end piece is inside the engine. Do you think it will hurt anything?? I really appreciate your advice. I already had the lower gasket set and went to get a 10mm 1/4" dr swivel to start removing the intake. what do you think about the broken off end of the elbow??

The elbow was broken off at the O ring in the intake. I stuck my finger in the hole and came out with a wrinkled O ring but no end. Do you think it will hurt anything that the end piece is still in the engine??

I had the same thing happen to me awhile ago. Considering its plastic, I really don't see it being an issue should it get dislodged and float around a bit. But, you really should try to get it out prior to installing the new one.
