1994 Park Ave - rough idle

1994 Park Ave - rough idle
Hello everyone! I'm new here and just recently purchased my grandmother'* 1994 Park Avenue by Buick. It'* been a very comfortable ride, but this last week it'* been acting weird.
The idle is sometimes rough, and it seems a bit slow on the highway. When I say rough, the car has a bit of a growl to it and the car will sometimes shake. I'm thinking bad plugs/wires, but I'm not completely sure.
While driving on the highway last week the check engine light came on. It went off the next day, but I'm sure there'* a code stored somewhere. Is there an easy way to get the codes from a '94? I have the Alex Pepper scan tool, but I haven't had any luck connecting. I'm guessing 1994 is one of those odd years between the easy paperclip check of OBDI and the scan tool necessary OBDII. Any thoughts?

The 94 will require a scantool able to read the 94-95 GM vehicles... You will ofcourse need the OBD2 cable to be able to read it... This system is OBD1 with OBD2 codes and Connector...
Check the Vacume lines at the thhrottle body, seems like you are describing a problem as such..

This weekend I changed out the fuel filter, which seems to have made a slight improvement. I think next on the list would be the plugs/wires (I'm pretty sure the ones on the car are still the factory ones).
My previous car was a Regal GS, so pretty much 90% of the cars out there seem like a dog. This Park Ave just doesn't seem to be as peppy as LeSabres I've driven in the past.
I will check into the vacuum lines too. The car has been getting a rock solid 27MPG, which is pretty good in my humble opinion for such a large car.

No ability to check pressure, but I don't think that'* the problem. The rough idle is still there, especially when cold. I changed the plugs/wires, but haven't noticed any improvements. I think my next step shall be some top engine cleaner and maybe tear into the IAC and TBI and see if there is any carbon build up on those items.

yeah most likely plugs/wires or maf/iac/tps
my guess at least...
I guess it would not be a terrible idea to check out the resistances on the coil packs too.

I took the car into the dealership and they did some checks on it. The mechanics think it'* the catalytic converter, which they wanted $500 just for the part. I politely declined their offer. They did mention that the fuel pressure was 35PSI and that everything else on the car is nearly perfect.
Now I think I shall shop around for a new cat. converter.

35 PSI seems a tad on the low side... You can order a Cat Converter and have it installed... The will run about $60 to your front door...
The Fuel pressure for an L27 will run between 41-47 PSI... when you flip the ignition on with the fuel pressure gage attached( engine off ) the gage should fall within the 41-47 PSI range
