I have a 2013 Buick Verano. for the first say 1/2 hour or 45 minutes of a drive, everything works fine and the steering wheel responds to minute adjustments. After that the steering wheel will somewhat "lock" in a direction and require some increased force to make those minute adjustments and results in oversteering as the wheel lets go. It seems to get worse as the drive progresses but has never gotten to the point where the wheel didn't release. It has made me wonder a couple times while driving at highway speeds if it was going to let go...but in the end it always lets go and a quick readjustment in steering is required to correct the oversteering.

So becuase its under warranty I take it back to a GM dealer and explain that it doesn't present itself until well into a drive. GM dealer proceeds to drive for a small drive look at steering components, etc and then tell me that it doesn't present itself. Unable to replicate concern... They refuse to take the car for a long drive where the issue will present itself. GM won't pay a tech for driving the car that long they say. I say this is BS

A car can have something wrong with it after say an hour of driving but GM won't do anything about it becuase it doesn't present itself in a 15 minute drive? So this is a short drive car only? I appreciate it takes a long time but this isn't just a rattle we are talking about. This could have a serious safety implication. I'm trying to work out some sort of system where I can diagnose it myself with thier tools while driving but more than anything looking for others who might have this issue or better yet know how to fix it.

If you drive it for an hour and the problem arises, does it go away if you stop and shut off the engine, then immediately restart?

That'* a good question. I have never tried it but the dealership, after much complaining did suggest that I shut it off, open and close the driver door and then restart and reaccess the situation. Apparently resets the computer at this time? There are also no codes that were present on the computer.

I'm not scheduled to drive that far till next week so I will find out then.

I am just wondering if there is something causing the power steering fluid to overheat, boil, and put air in the steering system. If that was the case, shutting the car off after an hour run and immediately restarting would not clear the problem, as the power steering fluid would not have a chance to cool down.

Do you check the fluid level on a regular basis, and is there any sign you are losing coolant? Any sign of frothing in the reservoir?

I have not checked the powersteering fluid at all either before driving or after the situation presents itself. I will also check that the next time it does it.

Thanks for the phone number. Am I upset at the dealership yes but they have told me they will review on my behalf with GM and at this point and I'm willing to let them continue on this path. If they provide nothing, then I will elevate immediately. I'm sick of diagnosing problems with this car myself after being told "unable to replicate the issue". it'* only got 24K on it.

Is there another GM dealer you can try? Your factory warranty should be honored at any GM place, not just the Buick dealer where you bought the car.

Obviously they won't (can't) do anything repair-wise if the steering symptoms can't be replicated. Depending on your daily driving and the distance to the dealership, see if you can arrive there sometime when the problem is actually occurring.

Checking the fluid levels yourself, before and after the issue, is definitely a good idea too.

The car shouldn't have power steering fluid it should be electric power steering. Maybe the electric system is getting hot after that amount of time and causing the issue.

Drove for 2 hours one way. Did not replicate problem in morning. Turned around after letting sit all day and drove back home 2 hours. Problem presented itself about 45 minutes into drive. I stopped car, shut it off and open door and closed drivers door. Popped hood and looked like a crazy fool for a couple minutes looking for a damn power steering reservoir. Then I smartened up and the light came on in my head that an electric steering wouldnt' have power steering fluid! Jump back in car and restart. Problem still presents itself. Didn't have time to stop at the dealership but clearly I'm going to have to bring it to the dealer at the end of the day after a drive to show them the issue.

Oh and the dealer has conviniently forgot about me. I'll move on to another dealership and then GM directly if necessary. Found out an interesting tidbit of information...while GM apparently won't pay a tech more than 0.3hrs for diagnostic, the shop foreman is apparently salary and is "suppossed" to be utilzed in situations such as mine. Heard that from a mechanic from another GM dealer who happens to be a friend. Will be taking car to this dealer from now on.

Mine was doing exactly the same thing last month. The dealer replaced the power steering motor. It seemed fine at first but is doing the same thing again.
