Default Most of Buick'* future U.*. cars may come from overseas

From Reuters:

Most Buick vehicles sold in the United States after 2016 could be imported from China and Europe, according to two sources familiar with parent General Motors Co'* (GM.N) plans.

Only two of Buick'* future U.*. models, replacements for the mid-size LaCrosse sedan and the large Enclave crossover, are expected to be built in North America, according to the sources, who did not want to be identified because their companies work with GM.

The increasing tendency of U.*. carmakers, including Ford Motor Co (F.N), to shift more vehicle production to plants outside the United States is a hot-button topic in current contract talks with the United Auto Workers.

"We do not comment on future product speculation," a Buick spokesman said on Tuesday.

Buick is planning to shift production of the compact Verano sedan from Michigan to China in late 2016, the sources said. Production of the mid-size Regal sedan is likely to shift from Canada to either China or Europe in 2017, they added.

Buick is also planning to add two new U.*. models from overseas plants: The compact Cascada convertible, which will be imported early next year from Europe, and the compact Envision crossover, which will be imported from China in late 2016.

News of the U.*. arrival of the Envision, which went into production last year in China, was reported on Monday by Automotive News. Buick unveiled the Cascada earlier this year at the Detroit auto show.

One other Buick model, the subcompact Encore crossover, is currently imported from Korea. Production is eventually expected to shift to China, the sources said.

Buick is planning these production shifts as GM begins contract talks in Detroit with the United Auto Workers.

In Detroit, Cindy Estrada, head of the UAW'* GM department, said the automaker would be "tone deaf" to import vehicles from overseas "after the sacrifices by U.*. taxpayers," as well as union concessions, to create a profitable GM after a government-funded bailout in 2009.

The LaCrosse is being redesigned next spring, with production moving to Hamtramck outside Detroit.

The Enclave is slated to be redesigned in early 2017. Production is expected to remain in Lansing, Michigan.

China is the largest market for the Buick brand, with sales last year of 919,582 vehicles, more than four times the 228,963 vehicles that Buick sold in the United States.

Does GM think they are going to sell more Buick'* here in the U.* just because they were made in China? I really hope GM falls to its knees because of this.

Completely agree Mike. Very disappointed with the New Gm as a brand and its not getting any better. There really needs to be changes to our tax code and trade regulations, we are losing too many jobs here.

That story is bad news. More jobs need to be kept in the USA and it should be heavily regulated.
Considering how important N.American auto manufacturing is to the overall economy, I don't understand why so many families continue to buy imports.
Slogan should be, buy USA made vehicles to support a prosperous economy.
Has brand loyalty totally changed in North American consumers, against the big 3, because it is believed better quality, more reliable cars are now made overseas ?

That'* the problem with this country.....there is practically nothing made in this country anymore......it'* hard to find anything with "Made in USA" on it......

It'* all about the bottom line.......cheap labor overseas, should be offset with tax imports....

Looking around our town, when I was a kid, we had three textile mills, and two shoe manufacturing facilities......now, we have become a town of Service Industries...pizza shops, auto suppliers, fast food, etc.,.....all employing min wage personnel, and not creating much of a tax base, that industry did with with real estate taxes and higher wages.....our economy is becoming a house of cards, as evidenced by this country'* bond rating......something has to change...

We have lost our steel industry.....is the auto industry next?

"We have lost our steel industry.....is the auto industry next? "

GM'* post BKs are self inflicted. They should never of been bailed out, the action was all about protecting Union and white collar pensions- never about asking why GM went BK in the first place while German, Japanese, and Korean auto manufacturers thrived. Everyone at GM should of been let go when they went BK, and if someone wanted to buy GM, they should of let it happen post BK and the new owner could of hired new engineers, designers, and assemblers. GM and its employees experienced very minimal pain from the BK, and with that no sense of urgency in designing the best vehicles, GM is making the same old crap.
