Default Matching Paint on a 93 PA

So I got a hood from the yard. Wrong color. Its beige and I need to make it maroon. Do I need to sand it first? Can anybody suggest a place to get a match with my original color?

Have painted quite a few parts. If you can do a rattle can job at home you can get some very nice results.

If there is not rust/dings. I would just wet sand it down primer and paint and clear.

Then after a week or two use 2000 wet sand and then polish with a buffer.

Color info should be Medium Garnet Red, code 72, GM code WA8979, Ditzler PPG 3986, Dupont B8713, or Sherwin Williams 35894.

Here is where I got the info from.
1993 GM Color Codes - Buick Paint Cross-Reference

I am no paint expert, but I am pretty sure everything listed is just different companies color codes for that color, with the exception to Ditzler PPG, I am pretty sure Ditzler PPG 3986 is the metallic flakes used in the paint.

Wow. Thanks a ton. It sure looks like the correct color. I found the sticker on the spare cover. It never has 8979. The bottom line has, with many many spaces.

Ha Ha. Not me. My 17 yo son will be doing it because:

-he crashed the car.
-he has a steadier hand.
-I have someone else to blame if it doest turn out nice!

Update:

My son didn't believe the color was 8979 so we checked through the vin. He is correct. It'* dark cherry, code 9800/77, which on most sites is not even listed as a color for a 93 though I have the color I see on most PA'*.

Also, the same color will look different on some websites. Very strange stuff. And I know the car has change with 20 years of exposure to the elements. Should look ok at night!

I think you should make absolutely sure.

Top is Dark cherry metallic, bottom is Medium Garnet red Metallic

I didn't know it was an option in 93 either, but I know later years had it.
