Shaft failure and other stuff
1. Looks like my car has succumbed to the intermediate shaft problem---@ 4200 miles.
Must be a record time for steering shaft failure. I'm getting a slightly muted version of the sounds in the sticky-posted video in the "2000-2005" forum. It'* happening at low speeds, in parking lots, etc. Will follow up with the dealer...oh boy....
2. Got to thinking about it the other day, when I was scrolling through the "Vehicle Data" section on the DIC....what is considered the acceptable range for tire pressure? My car always reads "Tire Pressure OK", and that'* fine, but what'* the lower/upper limits for the sensors?

Sucks to here your IM shaft is already fubar. Dam. Mine has been on road a lot longer than yours but only has 4300. Hard miles though and some really high speeds. Makes me wonder about pushing 140MPH and safety. (well thats an oxymoron if I ever heard one LOL.) Havent felt anything as yet.
The low tire pressure sensor term is misleading.... Actually the computer compares revoloutions each tire makes in real time, by way of a wheel speed sensor attached to each wheel and if one starts rotating a little faster than the others it just assumes it is low and gives you the warning. These wheel speed sensors are also used for stabiltrack, traction control, and antilock brake systems. The car really has no way to tell what the actual pressure of the tire is.

Wow I am sorry to hear that problem has struck you at such low milese. My Bonneville GXP had 17,000 mile when I traded it in and I never had that problem once and I thought I drove it hard.
Hope your GXP does not turn into another Marauder disaster.

My friend bought a set of those wireless tire pressure monitors off of Ebay for his acura TL. 2 years have passed and they still work great.

Also, I blew a tire early on and had to reset the thing for a week when I replaced it with a new tire but it finally stopped comin on.... so there must be a "learning procedure" as well.

Thanks for the input folks...it is appreciated.
I hope so too...although the thing that really killed the Marauder was the move to Hawaii and the lack of proper care shown to it while in the hands of the gov't subcontract-movers.
The big hassle with getting the Bonneville fixed over here is the lazy approach of the dealership to getting it done...granted, parts take a bit longer to make the trip, but simple fixes shouldn't take a month and 1/2 to get done (like my DIC switch panel). With the onset of my steering problems, there are now three TSBs that this car has to go in for:
1) Steering intermediate shaft
2) Foglights
3) HUD shake
And I'm really apprehensive about taking the car in because I KNOW these ******** out here will take a week to make it happen AND charge me for a rental car the entire time (GMPP or not, these guys still won't give a loaner for warranty work---they put you in a subcompact from Enterprise instead at $25/day). This, after making me wait a month for the parts to arrive.
Man,....don't buy a car in Hawaii.

Quick update
Took it into the other Pontiac dealer on the island Wednesday; took 'em most of the day due to service backlog but sure enough, the steering did it'* tricks for the techs. They ordered a replacement unit that day; it'll take 10 days to get the parts here and then probably a week to get an appointment for the shop.

The difference in tire speed would explain why when I picked up my car, all 4 tires had 17# of air in them and it showed "Tire psi normal." Gotta love the dealer pre delivery checklist.

Finally...! Got it fixed today. Woulda happened last week but the @$$# earthquake screwed everything up...shop didn't have power the day I took it in.
Heckuva long wait...Sept 10th until now, and from 4200 mi to 5840 on the odo when I picked it up after service today. Geez....
