Now hopefully it won't be long before they pull off the STS shell and put on a beautiful GXP top. Then Pontiac will DEFINATELY be "building excitement"!!!

They liked it because it was about as good of a driver as the new 5 series, but didn't have all the electronic shit like the new ones, more like a 99 5 series.

Frankly a huge caddy that turns, goes fast and is appointed like this one is, is amazing.

There are manumatic gear changing, you can order your Final drive ratio, it's one of the most optioned cars ever. Not just the toys, but different levels, like the final drive. The tranny itself? A 5L-xx (i forget which one). But the 5L is for 5 forward gears. :wink:

As tested it was 62k though. :shock: No key though, just a fob in your pocket and push a buton or remote start it. They said muscle is back with this car too. With the upgraded Northstar i bet it is, can't wait to see a SC'ed model.

Theres definitely a lot of cool features and should provide the competitve edge against Euro imports, like the E-class Mercedes and the 5 from BMW.

The tranny is called the 5L50, and rated the "best that GM has ever made"

We'll wait for the release of these vehicles before we can accurately judge the "best".

New '05 STS Owner
 
My mom just bought one of these 2 weeks ago, After a couple of days of haggling they will come off that exorbitant 62k sticker a little (she got them down about $2500). I think the big price difference in these cars are the different packages. There is a 1SE 1SF and 1SG package. She opted for the 1SG which is the Performance Luxury Package but there are still individual options on top of that - her color choice was Redline with Cashmere interior. I have to say that it has a very smooth powerband and that Northstar winds to the sky compared to my LS1 in my Ram Air. As far as the new 5L50 it gets high marks in the torque handling department but we'll see how it holds up. The new voice activated, navigation, 15 speaker Bose, heated/cooled seats, Intellibeam, Rainsense, HID's -- I think its still a 'gadgety' car (like the keyless start, and remote start)but fortunately they didn't ruin it with something like BMW's idrive (uggh!) So far im impressed.. Im only 25 and I enjoy driving it (when she lets me). She also has the 3.42 gear, 17" brakes and ZF steering gear. - I also had the pleasure of taking an '05 CTS-V (the six speed 400hp LS6 car) for a spin around town while the salesman gave my mom a tour of the dealership, service etc. Needless to say if I had the 60k my mom forked over I would be driving one of those! Its 2x as much fun as my Ram Air to drive and had some awesome stopping power (6k in Brembo brakes should do the trick)... But then again I still appreciate having the SSEi as the daily driver :)

I rode in a loaded V6 with all the toys. It had good power for the size from the V6. I love the seats and the ride of that car!!

Another New STS
 
I just got a STS V8 Moonstone with the 1SE Luxury package. I had wanted a few of options from the performance or premium packages, but not all of them. Many of the options aren't available free flow yet. I drove the 1SE and it was amazing to perfection, so decided to get it and save a few bucks.

I would have liked the HUD but you had to get radar cruise control, and that only came with 1SG. The LSD and Magnetic Ride Control would have been nice too. However, it is easier to tail slide with the open differential, and the traditional suspension has a great ride/handling balance and is probably more predictable than an adaptive one.

I believe Caddy's going to come out with acessories including a cat-back exhuast system, brembo brake kit, bigger wheels, and possibly a supercharger. You would be able to put these on any trim level.

I wonder if my caddy deal could retrofit MRC, HUD, or LSD.

What was to have been the last piece of the puzzle has become the puzzle.

Pontiac mapped plans to revamp its product portfolio by 2006. But where the full-size Bonneville sedan fits is a problem.

"We'll build Bonneville through the '05 model year, but beyond that we aren't sure what we'll do," Pontiac-GMC general manager Jim Bunnell said in an interview.

The swing to sport-utility vehicles and crossovers has reduced the ranks of domestic full-size sedan offerings to Bonneville, Buick LeSabre, Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis.

But more telling is that Bonneville sales have steadily slipped, to 27,000 in the first 10 months of 2004 from a high of 96,000 in the 1995 model year.

"We keep asking what direction to take beyond '05 and if we should have a full-size sedan or a crossover like the Nissan Murano instead," Bunnell said.

"There might not be room for a full-size car. There's a lot of other things we could do with the money. Crossovers may be what we need to watch and where we need to react, perhaps a Pontiac or a GMC crossover or both," he said.

One possibility is to produce the next-generation Grand Prix sedan and a successor to Bonneville off the same platform and make the Bonneville successor a crossover.

That's what Cadillac does in producing its compact CTS and midsize STS sedans and SRX sport-utility off the same rear-wheel-drive platform.

If Pontiac goes that route, it's also possible the next-generation Prix and Bonneville successor would switch from front-wheel-drive to rear-/all-wheel-drive.

Bunnell said the latter is under strong consideration for the Prix--and AWD would set the stage for a crossover successor for Bonneville.

Here's one vote for the option that gives the Snow Belt another AWD car and crossover.

General Motors plans more rear-drive vehicles. It wants, for example, to build the next-generation Pontiac GTO in North America.

By doing so, Pontiac would cut out the time it takes between producing the GTO at GM's Holden subsidiary in Australia and shipping it to the U.S. GTO is a derivative of the Holden Monaro.

Holden stopped building '04 GTOs and converted to '05s at the end of September, but the '05s won't arrive here until late December or early January.

Shipping is the reason '06 GTO production will begin in May, so the '06s will arrive in the traditional fall time frame.

GTO is a low-volume 12,000-unit model, so having other rear-drive cars built alongside it here would ensure steady production at the plant.

Stay tuned.

Another plan is to use more alphanumeric designations rather than names. For example, the replacement for the Grand Am is the G6.

"We're looking closely at G5 or G8 designations. Lexus [ES330] and Infiniti [Q45] have done well with it," Bunnell said, hinting that the next-generation Prix could be the G8.
