Default GXP brake wear

I just went over 30,000 miles on my '04 GXP and the front brakes are worn to the "squeal" — the back brakes are about 2/3 worn. My 2000 SSEi had 98,000 miles when I traded and the brakes were still servicable. Besides the dust problem, has anyone had problems with brake service life? The rear brakes shouldn't wear much at all, from previous experience.

John, try to stay on topic and productive in your posting. Particularly in the mechanical sections.

B52, try running Raybestos Quiet-stop Ceramic pads. They seem to work well with stock rotors on the newer bonnevilles, last a long time, and produce very little dust. GXP brakes have been a minor problem here, and I'm not sure why. Perhaps a pad compound change.

30,000 does seem to be a litlte low to me, but as far as I can remember, 30,000 is about the expected life expectancy for most brake systems. My brakes are almost totally worn out at 55,000 miles though on the originals. What kind of driving do you regularly do?

i agree, 30k is a bit low, but still within the normal, life expectancy for front brakes typically is 30-50k and the rears 80-100k miles. this is 95% dependant on driving habits. i find it hard to believe that the rears are 2/3 worn at 30k miles, that is virtually unheard of. there should be more like 2/3 remaining. I replaced all my pads with 45k on them, the fronts were pretty much toast and about 3-4/16 remaining on the rears

I have only 8000 miles on my 2005 GXP and my brakes let off a high squeal when applied. When I push on them hard, the squeal goes away. My dealer told me to live with it as they are semi-metallic pads. Is this correct?

BB52, As Will mentioned the GXP brakes are aggressive and the pads seem soft, brake dust is a big problem on rims.Easy to believe 30;000 life of front pad. I havent got to the brakes yet but ceramics seem the way to go.

BBGXP Squeling??? Mine have never and I cant believe Mr. Goodwretch said live with it.( yes I can ) First I've heard in the section of squeling brakes, but now that it'* mentioned??? maybe somebody else has and will post. I would quess you got them hot at some point.

My moms GXP does the same thing. The dealer also said the it'* the semi-metallic material and that they are high performance brakes so there will be a slight high pitched squeal when braking. They said its normal. As long as the radio is on you can't hear it, but then you can't hear the engine or awesome exhaust note.

Speaking of exhausts, my neighbor thought my mom had an exhaust put on the GXP, he said it sounds too good for a stock pontiac. I just have to laugh!

That sounds like a load of CRAP to me!!! With only 8000 miles, they were either installed wrong (no AntiSqueal, aka Brake Snot) or are a bad set of pads. If you're anything like me, and are just don't want to argue with the "experts", popping the pads off and applying the Brake Snot yourself is a very simple process. I had to do that once with my wife'* van when I got lazy with the brake job. Took maybe a half hour to do both sides.
