I an getting some AC Delco Racings plugs sent from 1995SSEI. i've run three bottles (minus alot of purges) on platinum plugs and gonna hold off on any more till I get the new ones installed. The OEM's gotta be ready to "glow" and dont want a predetonation. I put up a post in Performance section and the S/C guys gave me some pretty good things to consider and I went with AC Delco 441LT. It is one and a half ranges colder than stock and has a recessed tip to prevent detonation and should work out great for nitrous. I am going to let Mr. Goodwrench put them in, when my replacement fog lamp harness gets here. My cars going back into the custom shop early next week to convert to all air suspension so hopefully the harness will be at dealer by the time it comes out. I'm having the Dexcool drained and flushed out totally. And switching to green, when the harness arrives so the cars gonna be there a day anyway. And might as well let them do plugs. I guess I'm getting old, but I just dont want to go through the hassle and it's looks like a f n bittch to get them back plugs out and my legs say dont do it  It's gonna be real interesting..... The car hasnt been there since paint, wheels and Nitrous/purge kit and I cant wait to see their faces.

I am still searching for site where text of this Bullitens can be found. If any body knows of one please post or if you have a particular one also. Would be nice to make each TSB listing a clickable link to the text of bulletin.

In a recent conversation with GM Rep at a custom Show I learned a little more of an issue with head bolts "popping" out. I heard of this on aging high mileage LD8's but had'nt considered it a real issue till now. He felt the boost of nitrous could be enough to pop a head bolt because the issue happens to much newer ones as well. Alot from overheating and others "just because". Whats compounds this is it's alot of time the issue doesnt show itself right away and antifreeze leaks into cylinders and head warpage occurs.
I have done some limited digging and finding what he mentions. There is a rebuild kit and I will post in the "GXP N* Parts List I plan to get in here soon. This really rains on an already cloudy N* situation. I'm not planning to take out my nitrous but really wonder how much modding the heads can accept.? |
Great info John...
While digging into the heads isn't the preferred thing to do on such a new car. I've seen many cars that are shipped to a performance shop and ripped down w/zero miles on them. If someone has the guts to rip it apart and redo it better than before...(slaps John on back) you are the man. A little porting...polishing..headwork etc... let's see what a N* is really capable of when someone has the guts to lead into the great unknown as you already have. |
Venom that list is huge and I hope I don't run into issues @ 20k miles.
I sure do enjoy my GXP though! HBomb |
Glad to see another N* member aboard H Bomb and even with all the TSB's.... we do have some higher mileage GXP' with no problems yet. Sems to be a rash of "Made on Mondays Syndrome" here, mine included.
Bill I thought about the possibility of pulling the heads but not many headshops with any N* experience and refiiting all the head bolt zerts and having them hold an expensive dicey game of chance, And as for porting, polishing etc. Cant be done. the valve seats and guides are powder coated and cant even be rebuilt let alone modded. The heads are considered disposable and key rebuild parts are unavailable let alone higher performance ones. It's not all bad , I'm just dissapointed that I cant take it to the Hp worth putting on the track without big worries about longevity. Still happy with my 75Hp shot of nitrous. And for those that dont want nitrous a few things can still be done for a little more giddyup. :D |
Airbox Question
1) Will gutting the airbox give me better fuel ecomomy
2) In gutting the airbox. Do you take out that plastic narrow tube on both sides of the airbox??? :? |
Thats for that reply GXP Venom. Ive been out of the country and just got back. You seem to have a lot of knownledge regarding these issues.
Once again thanks... |
Thanks for the great compliment Blkbonni, I am very interested in our Northstar engine and have done alot of research and try to temper it with 30 years of backyard mechanics. I enjoy finding out all I can about it and also enjoy helping others where I can. But no one in the forum is an irrefutable expert so dont take everything I say as Word. I do try to point out what is fact and what is opnion in my responses :D
