We have a Cadillac Seville 1997 where we have to add a quart every 1200 or so miles, and I was wondering if the newer engines has the same amount of consumption or if they toned it down a bit. How much do you have to add every x amount of miles?

I haven't had to add any so far. Of course I just did my first (3000 mile) oil change. I only Have 3800 miles so far.

They might have reduced consumption in the later revisions of the Northstar. Anyone else want to confirm wether or not they have to add oil to the engine to keep it up to level?

Honestly, I am about ready for my second oil change and I haven't checked it in between. No warning lights have come on, maybe I will check it tonight just to see.

I know that my GTP did not consume oil. It started leaking when I hit 100,000 miles. But it never burned any. The most it was ever low was 1/2 quart after 3000 miles of hard driving. My parents have a 93 sedan deville with a northstar it it does not use any oil at all. My dad takes very good care of the car and it is always normal when he checks it. Their caddy has 142,000 miles on it. I guess what I am getting at is it is not something I am concerned about with this car.

The 1997 edition of the Northstar engines and around that year, mayby a couple of years after had a more aggressive pattern on the cylinder walls which made them "use" more oil. People had to add a quart every 1,200 or so miles to keep it up to level. Of course, this resulted in 200,000 mile engines showing absolutely no wear at all when they were taken apart (the pattern and factory markings is still there!). I just wanted to confirm if they turned it back down in later models so it didn't "use" as much. Thanks!

I have about 3550 miles on my GXP now and I have had to add 1 quart of oil thus far. However, being in Germany, I have had the car on the autobahn several times and run it pretty good. I have had the car up to 140 mph a few times thus far and I cruised at a steady 115 mph for about 15 miles 2 weeks ago. The car ran smooth as silk. I live in Berlin so I also get the stop and go traffic. When I added the quart last week I wasn't too surprised considering the driving conditions I have put it through. I will continue to watch it though. I had a 1996 SSE in Texas for 5 years and it never burned anything. That was a different engine though of course. This car still turns heads big time over here! I really do get a kick out of it! The sound is what really gets people looking. They hear it, then look and keep looking waiting for me to hit the accelerator again. It'* really funny.

My 94 northstar use 1 quart of oil per 500 miles. Normal should be a quart for every 2 or 3000 miles according to the dealer. Also according to the dealer the new engines have the exact same "problem" with oil consumpton.

According to the tech types it'll happen with either type of oil. I talked to the dealer about a cleaning process that they do to the engine to remove carbon build up that is supposedly the cause. They quoted me $600 for the cleaning. Sometimes the cleaning process doesn't work and they have had to swap engines. If your still under warranty that'* an option. He also said the oil burning is not harmful to the engine or anything. So I'll just put in a quart here and there. I can buy a lot of oil for $600.

There is one theory that the break-in of the engines that burn oil is not done right. Northstars are basically racing engines and they don't like to be driven gently 100% of the time. I got my 94 Eldorado with 74k miles on it. The two previous owners must have babied the hell out of this thing. it burned 2 quarts for every 1k miles of driving. Since I've been doing WOT a lot more the oil consumption has dropped to between 1/3 and ½ of what is was. I'll keep you posted.
