Default Radio wiring.

Well, i'm finally dumping the factory radio and speakers. I bought a Pioneer DEH 5000 deck 3 way speakers for the back, and 2 way for the fronts. I'm a mechanic, and have some experience with wiring, and electrical systems.

2 years ago, I bought a factory cd-player from a monte-carlo, and when i installed it, the digital display for the climate control would not dim when the park lights were turned on. I read why on this forum a long time ago, but have forgotton why, and forgotton where the information is now since the site has gone through a few changes.

Pulling up the wiring diagram for the factory radio. I can probably wire the speakers, and power up no problem, but I see there are 2 or three leads for dash lights? One is brown, and controlled by headlight/park lamp switch. Thats the lights on input. Another brown or dark green wire is the dim signal input, and a grey wire for panel light. I also know it is PWM, but which wire, and what do they do? Just kinda confused about where the wires go, lol.

Well, i'll go do some wiring, and some head scratching...

This is a 93 park avenue by the way.
Thanks for any info or tips.

I am a little confused about what you are trying to ask. Bare with me a little bit. Do you have a wiring harness or are you just trying to hard wire the radio directly to the factory wires?

Sorry for the confusion. Figured once I get into the job a bit i'll understand a little bit more.

The radio in question is being hard wired into my harness. Yes theres plugs and adapters, but i got the wrong one (for a newer PA), and since i'm keeping the car till i run it in the ground, snip-snip went my pliers! lol

First question. The radio has an ILL labelled wire, which according to the manual is supposed to be connected to the lighting switch terminal. I assume this is to dim the radio for night driving. A wiring diagram indicates 3 wires that control the radio lights or other related lights since I have the electronic climate control. Which wire does this connect to?

I had a factory tape player in this car when I bought it. As I understand the radio diagram, i think it provides a dim signal out as well as a data line wire to the electronic climate control to control the digital display at night. When I removed this radio, and put in a cd-player from a 98 monte carlo, I noticed the climate control display did not dim at night, and I have to keep something over it at night because its so bright! I read something on the techinfo that the climate control is pulse width modulated (PWM) by the radio, or something like that. I forgot what it was about. I just want to get the display to dim at night.

Second question. There are 4 wires at my doors, 2 for tweeters and 2 for the bass. Radio has a positive and negative lead for each speaker, yet there are four at the door. Yikes! Maybe I ought to run new leads right from the radio to the doors to simplify things?

I actually should find some decent manuals with wiring diagrams specific to my car rather than this junky haynes manual, ha!

I hope this helps..

Well, I got all the speakers all wired up. Hopefully the positives and negatives in their right locations.
There was an open in the grey speaker wire for the LH door, so I had to run a fresh wire through the door to the radio. Not a big deal when half the interior is ripped apart!

Rear speakers are pioneer ts-a962r 3 way speakers, and are rated for 250 watts. Fronts are pioneers 5 1/4 inch 120 watt 2 way units.

Well, even if i got em mixed up, the new unit and speakers are a huge improvement over the factory stereo.
Now I need to figure out how to work this thing.. lol

Where did you find the wiring diagram for the factory radio?

I agree... Where can a person find a wiring chart?

The easiest thing to do is to get the aftermarket harness for it, it simply plugs into the factory harness and gives you all the wires in universal colors
