Default does underpowering cause heat

Today i felt my subs when i got home from fishing and the cones were warm. My amp only puts out 1200 cea certified watts at 2ohms which is how i have it hooked up, which i figure with voltage drop since i dont have anything upgraded their only getting 1000 or less. So why would be subs be heating up if im only runnin em at rms.

Underpowering subs does not harm them. That would mean every time you turn the volume down you're harming the speakers. What is probably happening is you are sending a clipped signal to the subs and it'* causing them to get warm. When your voltage drops, your amp has to pull more current to try to keep the wattage up. IIRC, at this point the amp'* efficiency also goes down, so it'* kinda a double-edged sword.

How did you set your gain? By ear, with a DMM, or with an O-scope? Try to make sure your gain is set properly, and keep your bass boost off. It may help a bit.

What model amp and subs do you have? I'm running 1200 watts at 1 ohm to a single 12 and my voltage doesn't drop too bad (maybe to 13 volts or so at the lowest). Maybe it'* time to think about upgrading your electrical a bit. If your battery is old, you may want to consider getting a Powermaster or something similar.

i have an eclipse za 1200 amp with two 12 inch type rs. My gain is all the way up and the bass boost is half way up. If my gain isnt all the way up they really arent that loud at all, even worse if i dont have any bass boost. I usely play my music at 17 if i turn it up to 18 then my voltage will go almost into the red.I dont have the money right now to upgrade my electrical system.

Do you have an aftermarket HU or did you just tap into some speaker wires with a Hi/Lo level converter?

You really shouldn't have to use bass boost and max your gain like that. You're probably clipping your amplifier.

yes i have an alpine cda-9805 with 4 volt preouts. I dont understand it, if i were to turn the bass boost completely off and just turned the gain up it barely has any bass. My amp is the most powerful amp that eclipse makes and it seems like its more for sound quality than power, but it still puts out 1200 watts at 2 ohms , 1500 with 10%THD. Its weird though the frequency response on it is 20-20,000 hertz which is the human hearing range, most other amps i look at have a frequency response of like 20-500 or whatever, does that make a difference. My buddy has 2 12 inch p3s with a p1000 running at 1 ohm, his voltage will go down to 8 volts and it is twice as loud as mine, and the p1000 only puts out like 1300 watts at 1 ohm. Ive spent over 700 dollars on that system and have barely anything to show for it, it drives me nuts.

What model/impedences are your Type Rs? Are you SURE they're wired to 2 ohms?

There'* something funky in your wiring or settings or something. That amp should pound w/ two Type Rs. Are your interior speakers run off the HU or do you have them amped?

I'd turn the bass boost and gain all the way down on your sub amp. Then, go into your HU and get the EQ as close to flat as you think sounds good, and turn Loudness off (or on Low if you must have it, not sure how your HU does it). If your HU has a sub level adjust, make sure that'* maxed (not talking bass boost, but actual sub level) Then, turn the volume up as loud as you will ever listen to it (base this off of when your interior speakers start distorting, if you're running your interior speakers off of the HU. When they distort, go down a notch or two and that should be your max). Now that you have the HU set to the max volume you will use it, then I'd start turning the gain up on your sub amp. You really shouldn't need bass boost. Make sure the lowpass filter is set to around 80 hz.

If you can't get ample bass without maxing your gain and using bass boost, something aint right.

The type rs are dual 2 ohms each and i went by the diagram in the owners manual, right now the i have the subwoofer level all the way up on he HU along with the bass boost. This HU has a MAX button on it that makes it a lot louder. I mean dont get me wrong they will pound pretty good but they should be doin a lot more than they are. Another problem i have is that when i have that MAX button on it just distorts the speakers so i cant turn it up that loud and theres so much sound pressure in my trunk that it pushes the cones of my 6x9s further than they can handle. I also know that a big part of my problem is that my electrical system cant handle this amp, if i turn the bass boost up just the littlest bit on the HU my battery gauge will start to go with the beat, so i try not to turn it up too loud.

The problem is, when you crank the bass boost all over the place, you're clipping the signal. It'* probably causing more voltage drop too.

I'll say this. Before I had my setup dialed in, I had my loud on low and one notch of bass boost on the HU, and my voltage would drop into the 12s at full tilt. I turned off the loud setting and turned the bass boost all the way down, put my EQ to [nearly] flat, and turned the gain up on my sub amp a little. My bass is just as loud, buy my voltage barely gets below 14 much.

You could be clipping the signal, that'll do it everytime no matter how much power your amp is.

Could be a simple fix.. wont fix everything like voltage drop, ect. but check that u dont have one sub hooked up backwards. And ur box is segnated correct? R u running a sealed or ported box? how many cubic feet does each sub have?
