well a ported box adds 3db to your overall sound, so another woofer in a sealed also adds 3 db, so you could have one woofer in a ported box instead of 2 woofers in a sealed, there are benefits of sealed and ported

personally i always go sealed just beause i go for sound quality and i dont need all that loud bass all the time but i still like to show off once in awhile and with sealed i feel that it works for alot off applications.

there is more to sealed and ported then the ported is louder..
Depending on the sub the freq the ported is tuned to the size of the box etc etc
I sometimes read these audio forums and laugh at the comments made by some who think there audio gods one in general..
Anyways
Sealed usually key word being usually can be a tab bit lower in volume but not always. Sealed is easier to build no tuning involoved. Sealed also is smaller in size. Sealed in smaller enclosures will give you better power handling. Sealed sometime is refered to as tighter, more focused, not peaked, etc etc
Ported usually key word being usually is generally louder in the freq range of the tuning. Requires a much larger box, harder to build cause about 80% dont know how to calculate the tuning freq properly(winisd is not the solution). Generally has a more boomy sound again within the ports tuning. Can generally hit lower with more force than a sealed. Ported requires the use of a subsonic filter at or right around the ports tuning otherwise the sub will unload. Generally power handling is affected, and the larger the box the more its affected. This is the choice of Bass Heads.
Now lets break this down to the following question is my sub(*) specs geared towards sealed or ported.
Its not just a "oh I want to be louder so I will go ported" kinda question. You have to choose your subs and equipment wisely. Not every sub will sound good in ported and not every sub will sound good in sealed.
Again not trying to dis people here but the answers some people give are plain funny..

adding something into the port does the following
A: changes tuning since added space is being taken up
B: adds resistance to the flow of air which can cause whistling and or port noise
