Volume goes up by itself!

Volume goes up by itself!
Ihave a '92 Bonneville SSE with a stock CD player. Lately the volume has started going up by itself to the point where I have to shut off the radio to stop it. Does anyone know what'* going on? Could this come from steeringwheel controls? Maybe dirt/dust in the volume control?
Please advise if you can. Thanks.

When I have the stereo muted, it sometimes will come back on for no reason... well sorta no reason.
I've noticed that if my lights go from day/night mode, and the MUTE is ON, it will turn off when the lights switch modes. IE... it seems to be electrical.....
So I guess what I'm asking, is if your volume changes when you go from day/night mode.... ie... an electrical change in your car.

I had a similar issue once with an aftermarket radio. What I found is that when I accelerated the volume would go up. Found there to be a small spring metal clip behind the volume up button that was broken. Replaced it and all was well.... for a while. Then the down button went the same way 2 months later...lol
Moral of the story is check the steeering wheel controls for either stuck keys or bad return springs. You ever notice the volume changes in relation to the car stopping, turning, or accelerating?

Steering wheel controls come to my mine first as well. One note though, the radios in both of my 93'* have broken volume switches. It seemed odd at first, but the more I thought about it, the more I felt that the volume switches are not very good in these factory units. They don't rotate like a conventional volume ****.
This could also be a suspect.

Does Pontiac have a road-noise compensator in the stereo? My dad'* Blazer does the same thing on purpose, so if the engine noise is getting louder, the volume increases to drown out the engine (why someone would want to ignore their engine is beyond me, but...).
Pontiac tried a lot of weird things on those model years,, '92 and '93 both. The instant-defrost thing, etc... you think it'* just one more early innovation gone wrong?
