Replace rear speakers on 2003 Grand Am Gt w/ Monsoon System
I recently replaced my head unit with a pioneer head, and now I want to replace the rear speakers because the stock ones are blown. I realize that the stock speakers have 4 wires, 2 for the sub and 2 for the tweeter. I need to know the most effective route to take to replacing the speakers.
I had an idea to only use the sub wires and connect them to a 6x9 sub speaker like this:
http://www.woofersetc.com/p-8451-cl-...ubwoofers.aspx
However, I don't know if this will work or if it will be very effective.
Please help me choose the most effective route to get good quality sound.
Thanks!

You have the Monsoon amp still installed? Those are 2 ohm speakers. If you get 4 or 8 ohm speakers, they will not match the amp and sound dead.

Easiest: Get some stock replacements
If you want to use aftermarket speakers, you'll have to bypass the stock amp, and either run them directly off the head unit, or use a different amp.

JWE'* idea makes the most sense. Run the correct wires to the woofer and the correct wires to the tweeter. You can mount the tweets in the C pillar if you want, or you can get the kind have them as one unit. Because the Monsoon amp is also a crossover you won't have to use the ones that come with the speakers.
If you just throw some regular speakers on there and don't do it right, you'll lose a ton of bass, since the Monsson amp uses the 6x9s as "subwoofers".

This is completely incorrect.

My thoughts exactly, but a good set of coaxial 6x9s would work good as well.
As for replacing the factory 2 ohm speakers with 4 ohm speakers, as long as you get speakers that properly match the amps ratings you will be fine. The last thing you want to do is get some 4 ohm 300 watt RMS speaker with an 86 db sensitivity rating. Find a nice 4 ohm speaker that is around 80 - 100 watts RMS with a sensitivity rating as high as you can find and you will be surprised at how good it will sound.
The higher the sensitivity rating is on a speaker, the louder it will be at any given volume. Also don't forget to look at frequency response.
