Default Need To Know Wire Colors For Front Door Speakers--Monsoon

Hello everyone! I'm in the final stages of my audio install on my 04 bonneville GXP which includes a pair of 6.5" components for my front doors powered by a nice amp.

A previous owner bypassed the monsoon amp, so the wiring is a mess back there. I really just need to know which color wires were supposed to head to the stock midbass drivers--I want to run the power from the new amp to my new comps with the stock wiring for simplicity sake.

I checked at the door panel to see what colors were there and then did my best to match those up at the back, splice them to some longer wire and then to the amp--no dice.

I don't need to know what color wires were used for the tweeters because this comp set has a built in passive crossover that allows the tweeter to get power from the midbass (for anyone who'* interested, the comps are Hybrid Audio Technologies Imagine I61-2).

This is the last step that I have in getting some sound back! I could write a book with everything that I've gone through with this installation already (seriously, attach the mid woofer to the door skin? How am I supposed to seal and deaden that?).

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if these schematics apply to your application, but I found these a couple years ago while researching my own project. Have a looky...

the stock wires are tiny and you loose power, and you got to tear your car apart any way to get at everything, you might as well put the better wire in there. might take ten extra min when you have it tore apart already.

You don't need to pull the Bonnevilles apart to run new speaker wire.

The wire at the door isn't tiny, so I would assume that it'* not tiny from the back to the front.

Remember, the stock speakers are AMPLIFIED so the wires leading from the Monsoon amp to the door would have been beefier than the ones behind the head unit.

Mike, thanks for the schematics. The colors of the wires at the door are grey and tan for the left front midbass and light green and dark green at the right midbass. I'll have to inspect the diagrams further (I'm not great at reading them) to understand if those just lead directly from the amplifier (in my case, the bypass wiring) or if there'* a change in color somewhere along the way.

You don't wanna use to big of a wire when running speaker wire. If you go too big you'll introduce extra interference due to magnetic flux.

I'm not sure about the magnetic flux portion of that statement (it'* been a few years since I took physics), but I agree about running huge wire. There'* no real point--I'm only going to be running 100 W RMS to each channel.

I used the battery trick to figure out the wiring. Put one wire on one end of a 1.5V battery, then keep touching wires to the other end of the battery until you hear a pop, then you know you have a pair. Then you can figure out polarity by watching the speaker and seeing whether it pops in or out.

After my second speaker upgrade I did end up replacing the wiring, but my speakers also pull quite a bit more wattage.

I wouldn't even know which wires to start with! That'* my problem. I don't see the right colors back there. I'm going to check again on Saturday.

ymmot, Do you remember off the top of your head what the wire colors were?

you can run 2 gauge wire for speakers if you want it dont matter, it pointless though. and ive had several gm amped cars and the wires are tiny its like putting a resistor in series with your speakers, and it makes a difference because your load is typically only 4 ohms even more important if your talking subs your talking 2 or 1 sometimes

So I guess every electrical class I've ever taken when they talk about skin effect they were completely wrong. I'll be sure to let them know.
