Ok...I have a cheap box, with two 8" subs and 2 tweeters. I also have a cheap Audiovox amp thats puts out 120 watts x2, or 60 Watts a channel correct. It doesnt have a low pass filter or anything, and I think that the tweeters may be stealing some of the subwoofer'* watts. Could this be happening? I can hear the tweeters putting out sound too. I am also worried it is over working the amp. Do yall think the tweeters could be stealing some watts and overworking the Amp?

- If the amp puts out 120x2 it does exactly that - 120 watts x 2 channels - 240 watts total. Do you have a link to stats on the amp? More then likly the stats are at an Ohm that you are not running or a voltage that you will never even peek at. Are you sure no LPF? I have NEVER seen an amp without somekind of filter! As for the subs/tweeters - What is this a prefab box with tweeters in it? If so the tweeter are inline with a filter before them.

Yes, the tweeters are using power from the amp - so taking power away from the subs. No, you will not over work the amp as long as you are not clipping the amp.

The sub and tweeter box is from autozone(yes, i know cheap :? ) The tweeter and subs are all hooked up at the same points. There is no built in filter in the box...i took it apart to check. If the tweeters are taking watts, I am going to disconnect them. I want as much power to the subs as i can get.

- There has to be a filter for the tweeters (it could even be on the tweeter and very small) I looked at the manual and it is a 120 watt 2 Channel amp, so 60 watts x 2 Channels Peek, 30 watts x 2 Channels RMS @ what voltage? They dont say, but I'd be willing to bet that is at 14.4 volts. You are nowhere near that voltage so it is less watts then rated.

- Just by unpluging the tweeter might not give you more power to the subs because you will prob. be changing the resistance (Ohms). You could also harm you amp if the Ohms are not in the amps range.
- Do you have an Ohms reader? If so unplug the speaker wire from the back of the terminals on the box and check the Ohm. Then unplug the tweeters and check the Ohm. And then report back.

oh yeah...i forgot, it i use low level inputs with rca like wires. That must be the filter, but the tweeters still get high tones. I want to elimante them. When i hooked them up to my stereo in my room, they were getting under 30 watts, and were louder than with the volume turned up. The tweeters must be taking some watts. Disconnecting the tweeters is going to be my project tomorrow, unless yall convince me other wise. The subs arent that bad for what i paid, and came with a ported box. they hit ok, when it was connected to my stereo in my room at under 30 watts, i knocked a clock off the wall with them.

here are some results...i disconnect the tweeters and i was like wow! the subs are hitting harder and are louder than ever. I then go to look at the subs, and i realize only one is flexing, and i'm like oh crap....then, i found out that one of the input wires has gone bad, so only one sub is working, but it is still better than before. The one sub rattles the car pretty good for an 8". I cant wait to get the second one working. I am going to get some new wire in a few minutes, and will then post the rest of the results later. How are your subs wired up? One sub to each channel? You could try bridging both channels and putting your subs in parallel (2 ohm load) I dont know how well your amp will handel that. IMO having tweeters in the trunk is a BAD idea. they will do nothing but mess with your sound. I agree, disconnect those tweeters ASAP. Do you have a crossover in your head unit for your subs? If not you should get a choke coil b/c highs coming from your subs are going to sound bad and could be harmful. For fun you could try plugging the ports with socks or something to see if you like the sound better that way.Good luck!

you really shouldnt plug the ports on any box. I would deffinately disconnect the highs though, but other than that i would just run the wires normally and be sattisfied with what you have until you can afford more. Try reading some of the tutorials in the sticky at the top of the page too and see if that helps you better understand how it all works.

Wow, i am impressed, and shocked at what i was missing. I went to Pepboys, and bought 20 ft of LA Bolt RCA cable, and ran it to the subs and headunit. With the tweeters disconnected, its nothing like before. The subs are hitting pretty good, and you can definitanly feel them when they hit. I am now wondering...would it help to plug the ports or make them smaller, and should i add some polyfill to the box? I am so sure that the tweeters were robbing some serious watts. After disconnecting the tweeters, one sub was louder and hitting harder than before with the tweeters.
