Default Used GXP - remote starter issue/question - revisited

I purchased a slightly used GXP with 12K miles. I'll post pics and stuff later. Right now I need to fix the several "issues" with the car. The big problem is the previous owner put in a remote starter. The car lot where I purchased the vehicle, (not a GM dealership) did not have the factory fobs and only had one aftermarket fob. When I questioned them hard on this issue they shrugged and said basically "buy the car or don't". Well the car is sweet, so I took it. Anyway, I can't use the multi-driver seat/mirror memory function without FOB#1 and FOB#2. I don't really see a need for a remote starter, although many on this forum will probably disagree with me. There is still a lot of warranty left on this car. I don't know jack about remote starters. I feel I will need to use the warranty, the car has the dreaded steering clunk already, and I don't want warranty issues at the dealer.

Question 1. Can you get aftermarket driver1 and driver2 FOBs with a remote starter and will all of the factory functions work (alarm, VAT, dual driver) as well as the remote start?
Question 2. Should I just take it to a dealer and tell him to rip it all out and restore it to factory specs and give me two original factory FOBs?

I don't know the starter brand - I found the box under the radio-behind the console. It has a sticker that says "QC Pass VI" (I think) or maybe" Pass IV" . No other markings. The aftermarket FOB has no markings on it either.
I have no manuals of course, either.

Your Warranty is this through the dealership you bought the car from or the original GM warranty ?

The answers to your questions....

1) This depends on how the Installer interfaced the R/* (Remote Starter) into your vehicle. It may be connected to the alarm, it may not. I assume it is or the alarm would start sounding as soon as you Remote Started the vehicle or opened the door.

2) I would take it to the dealer and ask them to remove the R/* and to check the fuctions that you said were not working Memory Seat/Mirrors, BUT I would only recommend doing this if the Warranty is NOT the original GM warranty. The reason I say this is because I don't want them to tell you that your warranty is void because someone screwed with the electrical system of the car.
If the warranty is original (GM Factory) then take it to a good Stereo shop, BestBuy, Circuit City, etc. and ask them to remove all traces of the R/*, then take it to the dealer for the Seat & Mirror issue.
As far as the OEM Key FOB'* I wouldn't bother replacing them if you are planning to have a new R/* installed.

Well if you can't find any sort of markings on that thing, I'd say pull it. Chances are its less than name brand quality anyways. Personally, I prefer having an aftermarket unit, as I'm the only person who typically drives my car, and the memory recall isn't much a concern for me but I could certainly see how it would be for somebody else however.

Sorry, I didn't mention the only warranty is the original factory. The car lot I purchased it from was out of town and I didn't want to deal with them any more than I had to. I also forgot to mention who ever installed this POS screwed up the headliner. The homelink/moonroof controls are loose and dangling and the back of the headliner has a crease where it was pulled down, which I can see in the rearview mirror while driving. I'll have to pay to have those fixed if they broke the clips, etc.

I thought of something after my response............check your fuses.
It could just be a blown fuse thats causing the seats & mirrors not to work.

You can get replacement FOB'* and get your memory seats and mirrors back. The dealer just has to program them, or there should be a procedure around here in techinfo. (link at top of the page, left side.) Personally, after having my car screwed up from having Best Buy *attempt* a remote start installation, I'd be a little hesitant to keep it because they mess with a LOT of wiring to get them functional, and with all the extra relays and modules, there'* a far greater chance of something going wrong, keeping your car from working properly.

The seats/mirror memory actually works, but the manual says I need the two FOBs to reprogram/change the settings and of course without two FOBs the memory won't automatically set when my wife and I each enter the car, that is if I can get the memory reprogrammed from the previous owner in the first place. I also need two FOBs because the car lot only gave me one and my wife and I each want one (even discounting the seat memory issue). I'm nervous about GM seeing this thing and saying "no warranty on anything electrical on this car". You know you have to argue with them anyway, this will give them more deniability.
The decision is either: Have stereo shop sell me new FOBs and try to make them both work with the starter, alarm, dual driver, etc. (could be in for some headaches) or...
Have stereo shop remove all pieces of the remote and sell me original type FOBs and reprogram car to factory settings.
I don't think I want a GM dealership to get involved in this unless I have to. I might have to have a dealership fix the screwed up headliner if a stereo shop cannot.

So basically: Does anyone have a remote starter and two different FOBs with dual driver memory that everything works ????? Uh? I should of just asked that in the first place. Duh.

I'm a little confused. If you have a GXP it'* either a 2004 or 2005. The key fobs can be used to differentiate who is getting into the car before you actually get in, but they aren't "required" to use memory settings. I have a 2004 GXP and have tried this myself.

You will have a '1', '2' and 'Exit' button on your driver door. Press either 1 or 2 to select which driver settings to program. Set your mirrors, seats and any of the other memory devices you have (ie: climate control). Press and hold the same button again until you hear two beeps. The settings are now saved for that driver. You can do the same for the second driver. Now when you open your door, simply press the corresponding driver button (either 1 or 2) based on which of you will be driving. The car will adjust everything accordingly.

Fobs just allow this to happen as soon as you use the remote unlock so everything is set before you actually get to your car. You can also program the 'Exit' button in the same way. For example if you want your seat to move all the way back before you get out. Program it the same way as the other two buttons. Then, just hit 'Exit' before you leave the vehicle.

Personally, I'd find someone you trust to remove the aftermarket equipment and restore the original configuration. Key fobs for both Driver 1 and Driver 2 are a snap to find (and cheap too) on eBay. You would have to get them set-up by your local dealer though as it requires a Tech 2 tool.

Thanks, your post got me wound up so....
Last night when I tried to reset using the manual buttons on the door I only got one beep and it didn't remember the settings. Then I just went out and tried it again. Shazaam. It works, (but still only one beep not two). I swear I tried it five times last night. The single FOB I have is set for driver #1. This isn't rocket science. I wonder why I had problems. I misread the manual where I thought it said I needed the FOBs to program the exit settings. I will talk to a stereo shop about getting a FOB for driver #2 or ripping the whole system out, whichever allows everything to function as intended by the GM gods (and is easiest).

OK, two high-end alarm/stereo shops would not help me figure out this starter problem. Here is where I'm at. I really just need to get an additional FOB for the car so my wife and I each have one. I need to find the manufacturer of this remote starter to do that. I CAN'T FIND THE DARN THING. I found a module under the console behind the radio that has the PASS VI sticker. I thought this was the starter but someone said it was just the alarm bypass so the car will run with no key. Where exactly would someone put this starter in a GXP. One shop told me to drop the dash. Uh?? I'm handy but not that handy. I removed the underside of the driver area but there'* nothing by the steering column. The stereo shops will only rip it out for $110 or two hours labor. Neither would help me find another FOB, just blew me off, basically. If they rip it out I still have to go to the dealer to get new factory FOBs, so even more ka-ching...
