New Reciever Install
 

Im thinking about putting in a new reciever (JVC KD-LH1000) into my bonne, im goin for a regular DIN in the 1.5 DIN space. I was wondering if anyone had some advice/expierience on this. The factory display on my current one doesnt light up so i cant see the track, etc. I looked at sounddomain.com at some stuff, but I am wondering if I need all of the adapters they have (antenna, installation kit, wiring harness, antenna adapter, OEM interface adapter)... I dont want to spend more than i have to, but I dont want to get my receiver and not have the stuff to put it in. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

By the way, the bulb in the display has burned out. Unclip the front of the radio and you will be able to see the bulb in there.

i can fix that??? My parents took it to the dealer and they said it we would have to replace the whole thing for 300!!! They also said it only usually happens on newer cars. :?: If that's fixable, does anyone know what the part number is or where I can get it? Also any instructions or guidance would be great.

GM won't fix anything to the component level. A few guys here have done this. Try taking it apart and get the bulb out. There should be a part number printed on it by a videojet. 3 or 4 digits at the most.

i'll give it a try, you take the trim out, the receiver comes out, and then you pop off the front, or am I making it too hard? Stuff that I take apart w\o instructions tend not to work when I put it back together. :oops:

It's pretty simple. I think the hardest part will be finding the bulb. I soldered a small 12-v bulb into mine of similar size. I got my bulb at an autoparts store. Others have bought the bulb at Radio Shack, and soldered that one in. If you go with soldering it, you need a small 12-v bulb with leads. Take the old one out and try to match it.

I haven't inquired at the dealer, but the exact-fit bulb has a plastic base, and it is supposed to twist-out. If you take the bulb to them, they may be able to replace it by looking at it.

If it has numbers on it, we'll find it for you. If I'm wrong, we'll find a workaround for you. I don't like to see anyone spending too much money any more than I like to throw away my own!

I'm not an expert but I put a JVC into my 96 SE last summer. Should you go this route you'll need the antenna adapter as the GM antenna plug is smaller than the JVC input. You'll also need the trim ring (installation kit) as the JVC is smaller than the stock GM. I recommend the wiring harness as it allows you to do the soldering away from the car and than just plug it in to the GM harness when ready to install. It also means if for any reason you need to take it back out you just unplug it instead of cutting the wires and having to resolder. I got all the parts at Future Shop for about $50. Good luck.

The GM factory stereos are typically backlit with two or three mini wedge-base bulbs (I want to say either #37 or #73, I can never remember which it is) in removable sockets in the area of the two large control knobs, _plus_ one miniature bi-pin bulb soldered in just behind the Set button on the right-hand side.

With some disassembly, you can get at and replace the #37 bulbs in the removable sockets, but it takes even more disassembly, a soldering iron and patience to get the burned-out bi-pin bulb replaced. I did it a few weeks ago, everything turned out fine, but it was a pain.

For those easily-replaced bulbs, the _socket_ will twist out; the bulb itself pulls straight out of the socket. You can get replacements for the removable mini-wedge bulbs at any good auto parts store.

As for the solder-in bi-pin plug: From what I remember, there are two 12V bi-pin bulbs listed in the Radio Shack catalog, one available over the counter (black part number in the catalog) and one available only by special order (red part number). I installed the over-the-counter bul0A
