I was just wondering what the easiest way to remove the rear speakers to replace them with new ones. I have tried prying them up from the grill but that doesn't seem to be working and I've looked in the trunk but it seems to be screwed in from the top. Any help would be appreciated.

It may be different on your then mine, but the rear deck 6x9s are easy to come out. On mine there is a tray mounted from the top of the trunk ceiling behind the trunk lid. I have 3 large plastic ***** that screw out and this tray drops down.

Maybe Jr can chime in here, he has a 91 and they may have changed the mounting style. I also saw something in my Chiltons that indicated pulling back the rear seats to access the speakers. Maybe thats how its done in the 90-91 model :?

When I had my stereo system redone 2 years ago, I remember taking out my rear seats..... but I don't believe it was because of the rear speakers, I think it was for running wires.

I believe you are right SE89, go into the trunk, remove the tray below the speakers, and you should have easy access.

well i got the plastic thing off out of the hood and can see the bottom of the speakers but i still don't know how i am going to get them out. they are screwed in from the top. any ideas how i would go about getting these speakers out?

The back speakers are removed by first removing the rear seats, then there are three plastic retainers to pry off. Then remove the back dash piece. Tada!-- there are your 6X9'*

I just changed mine on my 97 SSEi. I did not even consider even removing the seat, and I didnt need to.

I just pulled off the factory speaker covers. They tend to catch on the carpet but theres no nice way to get them off ! Be careful you dont pull too hard and pull the wires off the tweeter.

There is a quick connect plug that you can disconnect the tweeker from the cars harness. Once that is unplugged, you can totally remove the cover and you can see your 6x9'* there. They are mounted on some type of rubber mounting assembly. You can either remove that or just unscrew the 4 screws and remove the speakers. Its a bit cramped coz of the back window, but its pretty easy.

My Bose speakers had died and I bought some aftermarket speakers and they sound great. Most 6x9'* will screw straight onto the rubber mounting assembly. They sound great even with the factory Bose amp driving them. :P

I was fortunate that after I put the new speakers in, I put the original covers back on, plugged in the integrated tweeters and now I have a 4 way on each side. Its good too because the factory covers will tend to muffle the tweeters that are on the aftermarket speakers.

You will probably have to recalibrate your compass. Mine was stuck pointing to southwest until I did the re-calibrate procedure.

Thats good info Andrew, however the rear deck speakers in the 97 SSEi are quite different in the 91 SE. My Chiltons manual says the seats have to be pulled forward

I have not seen a 91 before. I have a 92 and will have to change out the speakers in that soon. Hopefully it will be as easy as my 97.

For the 91 i had to remove the back seats. Then i had to remove the cover that goes over the speakers and the plastic deal in the trunk. they pop out after that

Ok I'm just seeing this post. Your rear deck speakers come out from the top. OK my interior is maroon and the actual speaker grill is gray. The gray grill comes out and you should see your speakers. They'll be mounted in with 4 screws the two in the back are a pain to get too, but once you get the screws out the speaker comes right out.
