melted fuse

1991 Olds Toronado. aftermarket remote starter, key less entry and alarm.
this unit has 2 hot wires coming directly from battery feed. they are both fused separetly with 30 amp fuses.
one of the fuses melts but does not blow! and it only seems to do it when I use the remote start.
why would a fuse melt but not blow?
curious to know what you guys think. (gals to).

There was a recall for a bunch of fuses that would pass current well in excess of their rating.

That's good to know.

Was it a particular manufacturer or time period?

I have never dug into it, but I can't help but wonder if there were a lot more. So much stuff comes from the same manufacturer, but marketed under various names/brands.

Thanks, I'll switch it out and see what happens. I sure don't want my car to go up in a blaze. had it 19 years

That's what I was thinking.

I wonder how many are floating around out there, waiting for a chance to burn someone's car.

I need to put on my stronger readers, and grab my magnifying, and see if I can identify any OEM markings on the fuses in one of my electronics boxes.

CathedralCub 07-01-2023 11:35 PM

I'm thinking I'll start paying attention to that too. When I could buy Buss fuses everywhere I didn't ever give quality (of my fuses) a second thought. Now that it's harder to find them (instead of all the cheap stuff everywhere) I probably should start paying attention.

I spent some time checking my ATC fuses. I can see Little Fuse on the majority of them, Buss on the remainder. It is molded into the same surface as the printed rating. The mini fuses are harder to check, but I could see "LF" on those.

Good info, thanks!
