Default Impressed with 25yr old stock speakers!

I used to run a ported 10" JVC with 500 watts in a Chevy Lumina sedan and it KICKED! Don't get me wrong, this system is not going to win any sound-offs anytime soon, but from a Dad/Husband that'* been out of the "heavy stereo system" scene for a while... the stockers with the new HU is hecka good.

Here'* a lil' history... I had some crackling coming from the stock 4x6s in the front, primarily the front right. Since the speakers are stock (25yrs old) I figured they were blown and I needed (at least) new dash speakers. What do you expect from a 1990 Bonneville right?

Well happy Christmas to me today! My wife (let me) pick out a new head unit and since Best Buy was having a $100 off sale if you buy a head unit with the same brand speakers with Geek Squad install. I purchased the Pioneer DEH-3200UB and a pair of Pioneer TS-A4672R 3-way 4x6s for the dash.

Unfortunately the Best Buy techs didn't have the right tools to trim the dash to get to the torx screws. They asked me to bring back the Bonnie back on Saturday so they can get the proper tools install the dash speakers. I thought that was a bummer, but at least they were able to install the new head unit... which brings me to...

HOLY COW! It wasn't blown speakers at all! It must have been the OEM stereo going bad, because the Pioneer HU with the stockers sound pretty darn good! I read somewhere on the forum where someone mentioned that their friends thought they were running subs, but they were just using the 6x9s and 4x6s without an amp. Now I know what they were talking about... I am impressed with the speaker placement and acoustics of the 1990 Bonnie!

Come Saturday, I'll have the new 3-way 4x6s in the dash and we'll see (hear) how that works out. Obviously, it'll be a step up, but this "starting point" is not disappointing at all! I'll be posting a follow-up thread after Saturday.

you will prolly loose a little thump with after market speakers, but overall sound quality will improve much

Thanks for the feedback. I'll let you know about the "thump." I had the techs run a Sub line (ignition and RCAs) if I want to add a setup later, so the option is there with little effort.

More to come...

My Turbo Grand Prix came with factory premium audio. It includes an amp and 6 speakers I think. Its sounds exceptional for what it is.
