Finally got time this weekend to try and do a nice job on the stereo install in the Lesabre. No more straping the amps to the sub box ghetto style for me. Heh. Got a cpl more things to do tomorrow on Sunday but its about 75% done. Got the 4guage power run from up front along with 3 rca cables and some remote turn on wire. All decent monster cable stuff. My buddy works at a stereo outfit and well... no maybe you dont want to know the markup on that monstercable. Cost is nice.

My QUESTION is has anyone built a sub box for these cars that sounds good, but is SEALED. Also, designed for a .9cu/ft internal volume 12" sub. AND atleast 1" in thickness MDF. The manual for the sub I just bought claims it will break 3/4" MDF. Right now I have my boston generator 12 in there made for more like a 1.5cuft+ box. BUT I have just bought a Boston 12.5LF. One reason for buying it on top of its one big bad sub is it designed for the .9cuft. Wich means MORE TRUNK SPACE. I could wedge the thing between the 6x9 housing then. As you can see in the pics my 6x9 housing is in the way of puttin the current sub/box against the back seat wich sucks up space too much. I travel lots so... yea. Help is appriciated!

This is what I have so far. I still need to carpet the panels I cut out, I grabbed a perfect piece of same color trunk carpet from a smashed up Lesabre @ the junk yard today so I can make it look nice. Also still need to drill some holes in the V12 amp side to make the cables dissapear more. Too bad its not like the rockford and hides _everything_. Still need to hide a cpl more wires. Those darn visible wires!






Sofar it seems like an ok stereo. Im not going for huge retarded ammount of volume or so much bass I can't hear the words to the song but you know just something that sounds good but has a bit of thump to it. But leapyears better than factory. Im sure things will shake good when the new sub goes in once I settle on a box design. Gonna have to add a farad cap for that thing im sure. Not pushing massive power, also why I want sealed sub box. Less power needed. Less port noise too but im sure that new sub will need a cap.

Power to the sub: Apine V12 MRV-100M Monblock sub amp. Dont listen to its ratings, it will suprise you with what it can dish @ 2ohms. (manual specs say 1.3 stable)

Unless I missed something, I read you are running a single Boston 12.5lf and an Alpine MRV-100M.


There is NO reason that you will need either a capacitor or a 1" MDF enclosure. That sub is a dual 4ohm sub thats rated at 1200 peak. No, I haven't handled on f those subs in awhile, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't weigh 200 pounds. You going to be running less than a cubic foot enclosure. That going to be small. The compactness of the box will support the wieght. You aren't going to shake it apart with that sub. 3/4" will be fine.

Where is what I have for your enclosure. Thats exactly .9 cubes sealed.

Finally got it done today 95% or so. Looks ok. Cant see any wires. Forgot to hide a cpl screw head. Will do tomorrow.

ClayKreiling. I'm not 100% as to what freq to tune the box to. You see, I'm not that good at this. I am going for quality of bass not booming of bass. I want to hear bass guitar notes individually instead of all slopped together hehe. Currently the Generator 12" does a pretty good job of reproducing rock music tightly with the premaid box I have that wont fit under the 6x9 housing. The Boston 12.5LF I picked up from what I am told/read though is a very musical sub and good for rock and such things like that. Its not a Techno I mean SPL sub. That being said I can give you any spec you want for this speaker the manual has 20 some specs listed.

Boston does list some box dimensions in the manual, that WILL fit under the 6x9 housing, but I am not sure that It would sound good in this particular kind of car. Even the manual says such things. They just give "guidlines" as they put it for what "should" sound good. My current sub already sounds good and its a cheap bottom of the line boston in a premaid off the shelf box. So a SQ competition grade boston sub at the very least I am hoping I can make it put a smile on my face when I crank some Sabbath or something with a custom box. Thx for any helps!

I actually built a box right around what size you're looking for, in the corner your amp is in.

Basically built a flat wall on that side, and the corner I added a box to. Here'* a pic when i was test fitting it, and before the wall was added to it. Ignore the shitty 10" JL'*...

Also I agree with using 3/4" MDF it would take some serious power and a heavy sub to break it.

Also wanted to correct you on one thing, a Sealed box requires more power to equal the same noise level (db output) as a ported, so a ported is more efficent (most boom for your design dollar).
The benifit of a sealed is that it takes up less room and generally sounds better.

I agree with the 3/4" also. If you want good rock bass then you want sealed for that kick drum punch. A ported box will not hit the rock drum like a sealed box. I always use a sealed 3/4" MDF enclosure packed with about a pound to a pound and a half of Polyester Fiberfill (pillow stuffing). This stuffing works great on a smaller enclosure to help the sub act like it'* in a bigger box. You will probabally want to tune it around mid 20HZ to mid 30HZ. I prefer the lowest with my rock. Which is why I always use a sub that is rated to hit as low as 18HZ. I also don't think you would need a cap at all. I am running a 1000W Zapco and it pushes just fine with no cap. I like how you did your install so far.

Thx for the tips sofar. Looks like Ill try and tune my box around the 25Hz mark. This particular sub plays down to 30Hz and rolls off to nothing around 20Hz. I have found an updated tidbit of info on this sub, apparently Boston reccomends a 1.0cuft sealed enclosure now. Besides upping from .9cuft to 1.0cuft the rest of the specs seem to have stayed the same.

As for ClayKrellings question I can build it no problem. I have finishing carpenter background from building custom houses with my family for clients. Thus, I have a basement full of tools so its all good. The box of course I would do on the table saw not freehand it like I did with the jig saw for my amp panels.

I found even more grey matching carpet again yesterday at the wreckers so I can cover it with factory carpet. Everything will match! Now if only Boston made grey subs to match. hehe!

I would like to find a DEAD rockford amp in grey, as well. They did make a few. Then I could swap bodies like I have seen a few peeps do to rockford amps. That would be sweet. Maybe ebay? Heh. I dont think painting it would be a good Idea. Probly destroy the heat dissipation properties. If only I had a powder coating set up in my basement.

I don't like using PolyFill in my enclosures. It interferes with cone movement if packed wrong or justled around.

But thats just me...
