L7s are real nice and they sound amazing ported since they can handle so much. my friend has 2 12" L7s (the new silver ones) in a huge ported box in his explorer and it sounds real nice. I'm about to get 2 L7 8" for the rear deck and im sure that will bump up the mids and bass a bit. They are worth it but find a deal because i would never spend full price because some of the prices out there are insane. Kicker makes nice stuff and the L7s can hit amazing lows if ported.

a friend of mine has 1 12" L7 in the kicker ported enclosure in the back of his grand am GT sedan. i think he'* running 1000 watts to it, let me tell you, it pounds. even with the bass all the way down it will still bump hard, and i can barely stand being in the car when its turned all the way up. those subs are crazy.

i also hear that alpines new type R'* are awesome in ported even with only a few hundred watts going to them

hope that helps you some

That may be the most ridiculous statement ever.. Prefab boxes are horrendous. They are tuned high as hell and made for 16 yr old kids who want nothing but loud obnoxious bass.

Ports to big sound hollow? Where are you getting this information from? I have a single 12 in a 2.5 cu box with 58 sq in of port. Hollow LMAO

I swear this audio section is hysterical. It gets worse every day.

Are you doubting that a huge port will make a sub sound hollow? Test it and find out I have... I had a set of Kicker comp'* in a cheap ported box that had massive ports in it and it sounded like the subs were set in a plastic trash can and turned on distorted and 'hollow'. I put the same subs in a box that they sell with the subs there at the store(not a prefab box from Kicker) and they sounded great... Just saying if you goto a higher end car audio store they will probably have a box that they have tested with that particular sub and had good success with it. Thanks for making yourself sound arigant and dumb making fun of a statement when you dont know the facts behind the statement.
Also if you want to figure out the measurements to build your own box you can get a calculator here http://www.ajdesigner.com/speaker/ajvented.php

Thats a nicely built box by the way.. the one he would get would not be that nice

Sounding dumb I didnt do, you nailed it on the head when you said cheap box. Key word cheap. If a person knows what there doing a port can be as large as ya want with out hollowness. If the port is to small you will have air turbulence "port noise"..

Most car audio stores dont have a clue when it comes to building boxes contrary to popular belief there going to sell you up and down they do, but again thats there job.

There is no replacement for a custom box, build by someone who has experience in the field, theres more to it than cutting a hole, and slappin a port on it.

If I ask on here what a mechanical value of a given sub means most will be dumb founded. And yet these are the ones recommending things. Most dont understand box design or audio for that matter, and that is where the problem lies here, most say get this or that.

Im not trying to be arrogant or rude but this audio forum is chock full of ridiculous suggestions. Person will ask for SQ and someone suggests a SPL sub etc etc.

I have been into car audio for over 16 years, I have seen it all trust me, I am the resident box builder on 4 forums and a Store cause my quality and experience in box design. Again not trying to sound rude or arrogant but suggestions like the one you made is ridiculous and you have nothing to back it up with. Your only defense was you bought a cheap store bought with big ports and it sounded hollow so now all boxes with huge ports will follow suit. And that is just stupid no disrespect meant.

Just for fun lets see if anyone can answer these with out google.

What is the audiophile grade of port noise per meter a second?

What is the QTS, QES, RE, FS, Xmax, LE, SE mean when looking at a sub to purchase?

What values would make a sub more suitable for sealed versus ported?

How does one properly calculate a ports freq? not using WinISD?

Etc etc etc.. Again not trying to be a smart *** its just I have been doing this for a long time, I have researched, read, listened, learned over the last 16 years and know what im talking about when it comes to boxes.

Now if you want to learn, if you want to be able to do your own boxes properly I will help you.
