Eclipse Point Source speakers..HELP on detaching tweeters

I had my subs installed this past weekend in :canada: , and when I got back I decided to upgrade my stock speakers. What the heck! :) I got Eclipse SP5000 5 1/4s and SP8994 6x9s. I told the guy I had a stock component set-up but he'd just disconnect the tweeters. They sound AWESOME, and I only have the stock HU too. So I know they will sound better when I upgrade the HU.

My question: I read the specs on them though and apparently the tweeter is detachable, and can be mounted elsewhere. :? I haven't looked at them very close and don't know how to detach them. Is anyone familiar with these kind of speakers?

Another question I have is the difference if any, in sound/sound quality, between Point-Source speakers and components.

Well to balance out the sound more, you're going to want be looking at beefing up the power to the components of course.

And there's 2 ways to do that, beefier HU, or external 4 channel amp.

Wiring for an external 4ch amp is lots of work, especially if you don't already have an aftermarket HU... so I think this decision really makes itself :)

And sry, I don't have any experience with those components, but they sound (used as a figure of speech :P) very awesome.

Mounting the rear tweeters in a different place I think is something that would at least be worth trying to see what you prefer, cause now the sound has to bounce of the rear windshield to get to you.

I will most likely be getting a HU I used to have (Pioneer DEH7600MP or similar model with internal amp) and I will go from there. If I do a 4-channel amp I may bring it back to the same shop since the guy there is really good. But I think the HU will help a ton.

The speakers are rated at 50W RMS (150 max) for the 5 1/4s, and 85W RMS (170 max) for the 6x9s.

I agree on the rear tweeters...if I could mount them in the stock location that would be nice. Here's a link to pics of the 6x9s..it looks as if the tweeters do pop out.

The magnets look like this (not exact model). They looked different than any other 6x9 I've seen. http://www.mnmbooks.com/ebay_279.jpg

Ok, so I looked through the boxes that the Eclipse speakers came in. With the 5 1/4s, there is a lot of installation hardware to mount the tweeters elsewhere, but there are no instructions in the box, and I do not know how to detach the tweeters. The 6x9s have 'detachable tweeters' too, but have 90* bend brackets and a bunch of extra wire, also no directions.

If anyone is familiar with these or similar speakers with detachable tweeters please give me some tips if you can, thanks :) I have done some searching and cannot find anything on HOW to detach them. Apparently it is not that hard. I just don't want to try twisting things and risk breaking them.

EDIT: If anyone knows someplace i could find out this info that would work too....

I would def. look into at least a small 4-channel amp. Ryan has Eclipse interiers and they went twice in about a period of 3 months until he put a 4-channel on them. I would hate to have that happen to you with no way to replace them for free. They will just overheat with not enough good clean power. No HU will be able to put out enough power for those speakers let alone good clean power.

Just my .02

That sounds like a different problem than power handling. I have NEVER heard of blowing a speaker due to underpowering. IMO, there was something else wrong and when he used the 4 channel amp it got rewired correctly.

IMO, call eclipse or use their website.

They blew (over heated) b/c of the distortion... Check out the rates at RMS and then check out the rates at peek power. This was on prob. on the cleanest internal amp HU out their. Wait till you throw that Pioneer at it.

FYI you can blow a speaker b/c of not enough power its very rare but quite possible. A speaker needs to move to cool itself down.

I've tried their website with no luck.

I've heard of underpowering being a bad thing, but I thought it was only if you are blasting them. :? So, if I were to turn the volume all the way up with my current HU all the time I would have problems. I don't listen to them that loud and there is no noticeable distortion at all. Also, my speakers are "ferro fluid cooled" which I figure is good for preventing problems. Any more info on that is welcome.

I think I'll just try calling the guy who installed them, he should know how to detach them.

I was just giving you a heads up... Ryan had basically the same speakers but an older version and had problems - You on the other hand may not.

One of the common causes of blowing speakers is underpowering them. When the amps are clipping heavily it results in a DC output waveform, this doesn't naturally oppose the cones motion, allowing an assload of current to flow, melting the coils. So because I see he said it was due to overheating, this was very obviously the cause.
