ok, I know our/my Bose stereo doesn't have an aux input, but I'm desperate for one.

Is it possible with any degree of modification to the actual stereo itself to get an aux in. Has anyone even opened a stereo and put a considerable amount of time into attempting this?

I have the better part of a Computer Engineering degree so I'm prepared to make some extensive modifications if needed.

As I'm at school for the next well... year, I won't be around my car for a long time, so I won't be able to try anything for a while, but I thought to do some research on the topic in the meantime.

Is there any way to get a cheap used identical stereo to play around with in the meantime?

i suppose you could use something like a CD changer input to make the interface work with the Stock HU

If it was me, I would just go with an aftermarket deck.
Alot of the new models (Pioneer & JVC) are starting to include Aux input & or USB, including the lower price range (if you don't want to spend alot).

So do any wiring or circuit diagrams exist for the stereo or any of its peripherals. I'd even take a means of direct inputting into the Bose amp, but I'm sure it'* got 4 seperate inputs, but even that can be worked around.

Note: this is in no way motivated financially, I have a plethora of high end HUs available to me, that'* just no fun. You have to earn your slick installs.

There are some available for Authorized repair centres, but you would have to know someone who repairs factory (AC Delco or Bose) radios for a circuit board diagram.

DO NOT do a wired FM modulator. I wanted to rip my bleeding ears off when i had my ipod into my RF headunit with that.

Trick with stuff like a CD changer input is not all decks have it, the voltage will need to figured for both, and somethign inline to adjust it (Noise adder).

Ok, then how about this. Does anyone have any high res pics of the guts of one of the stereos, or an old broken down dead one (or good one, but I think that would be too costly just to study) I can buy off them???

I've started coming up with some (what i think :P) are pretty awesome ideas on how to mod a complete stereo to get an aux in, and if I can get my hands on one while I'm at school I have all the resources of a huge University to work on it, then when I go home for thanksgiving I can test out the results.

I've acquried a stereo of the right year, BUT, it'* the casette version. Now in the beginning I thought this was going to totally screw me over, but upon opening it, it looks like a standard interface is used between (CD or casette) and the mainboard of the stereo itself. Pictured below:


So I wanted to clarify if anyone knows if this is the same interface used between the CD player unit and the mainboard in the CD version? Cause I don't want to put a bunch of work into this one for it to be a waste when I try it on my CD one.

Oh, and I had another question. How do I bench test a stereo?

Can it be done just by giving it 12V and GND? or do I need something fancier to make it think it'* in a car?
