Battery Relocation
 

I've been asking some people outside of this site about battery relocation. Right now I have an 8ga running from the battery to the amp for power, but I know that is not enough. Is 2ga pretty sufficient for an SE? I'm running an Optima Red top, 140 amp alt.

Would wiring the amp to the body in the back be better then running a seperate ground with the power wire?

Would a distribution block up front be good then?

2awg should be sufficiant for the battery relocation. I see many people also using a circuit breaker under the hood to protect the wire from melting and causing a fire, say if it became pinched and damaged during an accident. For grounding, you want to use the shortest length of wire reasonally possible, so you'll want to attach the battery's ground to the frame making sure it's connection is solid and paint-free. Now I assume your amplifier is in the trunk as well, then you'll just need to run the short length from the amp to the battery terminal for power (fused properly of course) and for ground I'd suggest using the same spot that you might ground the battery to.

Id probly go with 4 gauge. 2 would still do the job, its harder to work with and 4 would be just as good

When taking the time to do the job right, 2awg is no more work than 4awg. Quality brands are just as flexible, and when running 15-20 ft of cable, it will minimize resistance. Difference in cost is minute.

i have a 2 gague running my amp, with the same setup you have, but i have 25 farad cap

get the thickest you can afford. i learned a long time ago do not be cheap with the power wire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ect .

Not to get off subject but why/where are you moving the battery?

The idea was better weight distribution/balance. Somewhere on the passenger side, trunk area.

On my Focus Hatchback I used 0 AWG to a yellow top Optima in the back. I never had any problems at all. It may have been overkill, but it wasn't hard to run the wire, and it never left me stranded.

It sound easy till you have to run it :lol:

If i did do this, i'd just run it under the car I think, and drill into the trunk.
