Default Biggest Improvement to Audio System

Say you had 160 dollars in gift cards to spend at best buy.....and you had the stock 8 speaker audio system that came in the 96 ssei (delco with amped 6x9 subs), would you spend all the money on a new head unit, or split the money up between new 5 1/4"* and 6 x 9s? which would make the most noticable difference in sound?

i would not really wanna spend money on speakers at best buy cuz they dont sell that many good brands there, i would look at headunits but personally i dont like best buy because they carry a lot of low end stuff. they may have some good headunits though, but for speakers i would go to a better place even circuit city carries better speakers. So my decision is headunit if it is going to be a purchase from best buy. also you want more power from an aftermarket headunit if you are going to upgrade your other speakers. just dont blow your stock ones out too fast.

they will not give you cash for gift cards, thats the whole point of gift cards, to spend them at that store. I would definately look around and shop other places other than best buy, because they are gonna have a lot of lower end stuff there, they do have some decent stuff but why shop there when you can have a better selection somewhere else. I like crutchfield because of their support and warranties, but sometimes they are a little high on prices. Just shop around, go to your local audio shops and scope out what you want. Look at all the specs on models and compare (easy to do online) be careful with ebay not to get a beaten up one, or something like that, also you will not get a warranty on your product if you buy from ebay. Just look around and see what you like best. You can always ask about what we think too if you are having trouble deciding.

If you do get a new HU, you only have outputs for 2 front and 2 back, but that is probally the best way to go because new speakers realy dont do anything until you have a HU and possibly an amp.

well if you wanna go for sound quality i would stay away from sony unless its the es series. alpine, clarion, jvc, are good names to look for, but there are others out there too. I would say keep lookin around. Just so we know, how much is the range you are willing to spend?

that is the key...i wasnt looking for the best quality, but wanted way better than stock for a low cost. Everything has been fine for me. If your going for you want your whole city to hear you sound, sony isnt the best choice.
