I have an MTX 942 Thunder(940watt competetion amp) and a pair of 1000watt 12" BMW Nitro Subwoofers(some no name bullshit!). I bought this amp and blew a couple of 12'* at first so i went to Gibralter Trade Center and got the nitro'*. So i got them home and it seemed like every week ablew a pair. I need to know what kind of subwoofers can hanld this amp. I was told that i needed to purchase a pair of 15'' Punch subs that cost $350 a piece and i dont wanna go that route. Could a sound EXPERT help ,e out on deciding which 12'* i need to get.

THat amp you have is 940 watts MAX power. that rating doesnt matter, you want to look for the rms power rating, which on that would be about 420 watts. Then you have to take into account that mtx overrates thier amps and you have about a 400 watts rms amp. You should try to choose 2 subs that have a 200 watt rms power rating that are a better brand, preferably MTX so you dont have to guess as much with the power ratings

Is 400 rms good or should a say loud? What rms do you guys prefer?

It all comes down to optium power for the sub. Not sure on what the RMS of your MTX amp is, usually half of what they advertise for peak. so lets say your 940 is realworld power of 470 watts. Let'* just call that 500. So look for a sub setup that will take 500 watts contious power. either 1 sub that will take 500watts or 2 subs rated around 250.

Want to stay close as for amp wattage to sub recommended wattage. Like that sub they listed above 2000-4000 RMS. if you only pushed 1000 watts the sub wouldn't perform correclty. BTW everyone that is a massive sub sure, but it'* sole purpose is to go BURP!!!! not actually sound decent to listening to music.


93- to help clear things up, my bass setup is 1000 watts RMS I'm running 2 10in JL audio W7'* with a recomended rating of 500 watts a piece. The subs are getting good clean power and the subs are operating in their optiumal power range.

As for what subs, previously I had a 500 watt sub amp and pushed 2 10in JLW3'*, you could also go with the 12'* if you wanted. Not too update on other subs out there. Kinda stopped studing speakers and such after my system was complieted.

My friend has a version of that amp and he runs 2 JL W3 12"*.. Sounds hella good...I would recommend them definatly... if not a w3 then a w0 should work fine.

so whatchu sayin is that if a sub is rated at 500rms watts, you can run it with a 1000watt amp? What do you mean when you say "optimum power range"?

If you have 2 subs, sure can, that'* what I've got 2 subs at 500 watts RMS each out of a 1000 watt amp.

as for optium power range, this chart is the idea.
Most decent subs can take more wattage than what is recomended, but there'* tradeoffs, there'* also tradeoffs for under powering. I recomend to people to figure out what amp you want then pick subs.
