Default Radio No Sound- '98 Bonneville

I recently purchased a 1998 Pontiac Bonneville. The radio doesn't work. It lights up and the channel can be changed, but there is no volume. where should I start to see about repairs?

The radio is Delco. There is no sound or volume at all. I purchased the vehicle recently, and I did have to change the battery. I read in the owner'* manual that sometimes the radio will not work, without a passcode entry, after the battery is changed as a theft deterrent. I don't know if this is the case, but the owner did not know the passcode. The original owner is deceased.

If the display is showing LOC then the anti-theft is enabled and the radio is locked. But if the clock is showing and you can change radio stations, the radio is not locked.

most the time if there is no sound at all its the radio or amp, if its bose could be either. the bose ones are delphi radios too, they have a label in front of the shifter

That'* why I was asking if he knew it was a Bose or Monsoon system. If it is, maybe either a bad external amp or maybe even the amp fuse blew.

Mike 1995, thanks for your response. Where is the best place you think I should go to find out the problem. Dealership or some other type of repair shop?

Dealership would be fine, but they will probably charge you somewhere around $75 to "look" at it. This is the typical "diagnostic" fee. If it is the radio, knowing the dealer, they would probably charge you $400-$500 to install a new radio. In which case, you would be better off going to one of those mom-pop audio shops and having them install a brand new non-OEM (Sony, Pioneer or Alpine) stereo which would sound better and give you options of hooking your phone up to it or some other music storage device.
