Default Factory CD player

ok, when I bought my 93 Bonnie this winter the cd player didnt work and sometimes the radio doesnt get very good reception, so i've figured that i'll have to buy a new cd player, i've been thinking I should buy a factory CD player, so that it'll be less tempting for someone to break in and steal. but will the factory cd player play burned cd-r cd'* or not? and how much does one cost anyhow?

1) You might want to jump on over to the General Chat area right about now for some postings that will be relevant: http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...pic.php?t=5045

Most notably, your climate-control display relies on that stereo being in there.

2) If you want a factory unit in the dash anyway, have you tried fixing the one you've already got? What exactly is going wrong with it? Any chance you've just got some bad connections or a lot of dirt buildup?

well like i said it doesnt always get very good reception, most of the time the sounds isn't very rich or filling, but sometimes when i gun it, or go over a hill it comes in really nice sounding. as for the cd player part it doesnt accept any kind of cd, it just comes back out.
does anyone know if its fixable?
how much would it cost to get a new one put in?

It sounds to me like there is a short somewhere between your antenna and your radio. The short could very well be at the end of the wire where it goes into the radio. Sometimes the plug end becomes loose. You can test the antenna lead for continuity with a multimeter. Other times the radio needs to be grounded a little better.

The cheapest way out with that CD player is to have it repaired. Spare ones are rare and cost around $200-$225.

www.unitedradio.com will repair those.

Read the link above from acgssei for more information.

Ok, now i'm really confused :?

I have a 1994 Bonnie and I've seen people here say that any 94-99 Pontiac CD will fit, yet on eBay most list 96-99 ONLY, not compatible with 94 or 95. Can somebody clarify exactly which years/models will fit with a 94 SSEi? I've wanted to switch out the useless tape deck for some time.

As for a changer- i know it would be easier, and i've thought about it, but i just like changing CD'* on a whim too often. I have the CD w/ cassette adapter but it'* a mess of wires, etc......aftermarket and i'll lose my steering wheel controls.

So many problems, hope somebody can clarify, thanks!

Yes, any CD player from a 94 through 99 will fit. You are lucky you don't have a 92 or 93 because those are much harder to find! CD players from the later years are usually better quality. GM made minor upgrades to those radios over the years. Some Pontiacs continued to use that same radio through 2000 or 2001.
