87-91 Bonnie Bumping & Thumping

Hey all,

I've got triple 10" subs in my trunk. The thump is great from inside the car, but of course there is some rattle from outside.

I used some brown bread on the top of the trunk and it cut down on 50% of the rattle, mind you because of the extra weight of the bread material, my trunk doesn't "fly" open when I hit the release anymore. :?

I also used some padding material behind the tail lights, lp & holder. This helped as well.

But there is still quite a bit of rattle left, I think due to the key and latch on the trunk.

Seeing how so many of us love our bump and thump, I was wondering what others had done to get rid of the trunk rattles on their 87-91 (or other year) Bonnies.

Just curious if anyone has any suggestions and/or tricks they used to get rid of their rattle.

Yeah mine rattles all over the place. Never gotten around to trying to fix it though. I have 2 alpine type r 12"'s with about 425 watts or so running to each one. Hard to hear the rattle inside but outside its pretty bad. No big deal though cause in the next week or so its getting pulled and put into my 98 SSEi along with my alpine 7894 deck. Not sure if I'm gonna pull the 6x9s and the door componets out yet or not. Does upgrading the factory deck with an aftermarket one help the bose speakers or do they sound worse?

Triple 10" subs? WHOA, ya, that would be thumpin for sure.

But, I find that if I was to get new 6x9s for the back...there is no need for any subs

Even the factory 6x9's in the back are decent, no one sits in the back of my car without asking me to turn it down...and it never gets past 5 volume pegs on my deck...LOL

When I had the subs installed I removed the 6x9s.
I found by having the 6x9s in, it actually hurt the quality of sound.

At first I only had 2 subs installed. I opted for the third because the diamond enclosure fit the trunk really well... and the fact that 3 subs look better then 2. :)

When I added the third sub it did yield a little more "bump & thump", it improves the quality of the bass... dunno ... hard to explain... it just sounds better, but not a whole lot louder.

Once the weather warms up (above 10C) I'll probably spend some time working on getting more of the rattles out of her. I've got a good Brooklyn Bounce song that I use to really make her shake. 8)

If I find anything that works really well I'll let you know.

humm... so I'm assuming that you took the 6x9's out and so therefore in some accense ported your trunk. What did you do as far as rear speakers then ? Or are you just running front full range and all bass in back ?? Sounds really interesting. Wouldn't be a bad idea.. but I'm just too lazy to custom fabricate something for the rear doors too :? but it's got the wheels turning now

If you took out your 6X9's all you would hear is bass. Don't get me wrong I got 2 10's in my car but with the 6X9's all the sound is equal with just a little more kick from the subs. I can't even hear my front speakers they crackle anyways. My 6X9's are 3-way.

I removed the 6x9s in the rear, but I did keep the tweeters.
Basically it means I don't have much mid range in the back, but.. hey... I'm always in the drivers seat, so I might as well customize the sound for the front seats. :)

I've got tweeters and mids in the front doors, and I've also got dual action speakers in the dash. I've set everything up for quality, and not so much loudness. It just so happens it's really loud... hehe.

I can basically crank my system up loud enough, with enough bass to pretty much rattle the car apart, and the speakers still don't crackle. Most of the time I keep the subs on 1/2 power.

I found that with the 6x9s removed, I left the stock grills in place, the subs "sound" better.
