'07 -> '08 head unit swap reprogramming
I just swapped my Pontiac '07 head unit for an '08, so that I could have an aux port. Does anyone know of a workaround to going to the dealership for a reprogram through the OBDII port? Also, what info do I need - numbers off the new head unit chassis?
Thank you in advance, my fine motorheaded friends!

there is no work around for the newer radios i know of and to me its not worth buying a 08 radio and paying the dealer to program it. you would certainly be money ahead to buy an aftermarket radio and have way better features like bluetooth and a million times better sound quality

Yes - def want to maintain DIC capability. Just moved to NC from MI, so my sad butt has no friends - much less the cool ones you buy beers for because they have Tech 2'*! Got buddies in MI with them - may have to wait until I go up in a month or so, beer in hand, of course ; )

i think i would be getting a fm modulator rather than get a different stock radio then, they have them that you can plug usb drives and sd cards right into them, plus have a aux in port. if you get a decent one they dont sound as bad anymore. i have one in my bonneville that came with my xm, because my wife wont let me mess with the stock radio in that

I've got a couple of FM modulators around - I had a problem finding a clear spot to set it to in crowded markets (Detroit area), and may have the same problem here (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area). They both sounded bad and had lots of broadcast overlap, but perhaps worth a try. If I can get reprogrammed by a shade-tree mechanic with a Tech2 for $20, then I'll have an OEM radio with aux capability for around $100 total.

thats a big if. i would imagine 50 at a dealer. and everyone in the junk yards around here jacks up all the oem stuff a ton if you found one for 80 thats pretty good. i would expect 120-150 around here for anything after 02 or so. thats why i dont know why people pay it. you can get a decent aftermarket bluetooth unit with add the adapters and mounts for 120-140

I found mine on eBay, and it was advertised as $120 and had a 'make offer' button underneath it - I offered the guy $70 and he took it! Some of the butttons were a bit nicked up, although not the face of the chassis, so I swapped the pristine buttons on my '07 with those on my newly purchased '08, and it looks great.
I've heard that the dealership wants $150 to reprogram for the new radio - not sure if that'* accurate, and don't want to find out. I've got a friend that has the Tech2 unit and can do it in Michigan, so I'll pay him a visit when I go up in the spring, and tuck a 6-pack of his favorite brew under my arm. I've got two uncles by marriage that own service shops too, so beer to whomever can hook me up!
