2001 Aurora stereo install (completed pictures now)
 

I jsut got done installing the Infinity Kapp Perfects in my front doors. I started this task at 2:30Pm and I just now got done at 11:00 PM! This was the most difficult car I've done so far needless to say. Nothing was working correctly. Anyways, I have them installed. I spliced into the speaker wires at kick panels on each side and ran wire from the stock deck to a Line Output Converter. From there I ran RCA's back to my 150Wx2 RMS amp. From there I ran new speaker wire up the driver's side of the car, then split them into each individual door. Getting wire into the boot between the car and door was a real PAIN!!!! Speaker installation was pretty straight forward. Now, here's the funny part. I turn the radio on and these speakers who retail at $600 sound no better than the damn stock speakers!! The highs are extremely harsh and the bass distorts heavily. I just cannot believe this. After that work that took my entire day the speakers aren't even any better sounding then stock. I don't see how that's even possible though because I"ve had Infinity speakers before and even the cheap ones sounded so much better than these. I'm thinking now the culprit is the stock cd player... argh. When will this end.

So has anybody else used aftermarket high end speakers and the stock cd player? DId your speakers sound horrible as well? I don't think the speakers are bad because both channels sound identical. I have the amp's gain set to less than 20% too. the LOC's gain is set to 10%.

My thoughts are the headunit, as well.

first off ditch the stock radio its a distortion machine..

distortion + those speakers = you being very sad cause there blown..


next up using a line level convertor is a huge no no for SQ. Its a half assed attempt at making something into something its not.

find a decent head unit with 5v outputs for a clean signal to the amp and then sit back and enjoy...



oh and I would immediatly remove the crossovers from the inside the door if you value them at all... Slap em under the dash or somewhere where moisture wont attack them.

thanks for the advice. Don't many people place crossovers in the door panels? I had a hell of a time running just one wire through that boot between the car and door. No way I'd be able to get two in there! I have the crossovers wrapped in plastic bags. I think that should be enough protection for them. :?

well now ya got one wire in there.. Simply attach the other two to it and pull it thru LOL..


could have done the reverse of that the first time with the stock wire... Old trick

The boot on the aurora is very tiny. Probably about the size of a nickel in diameter. The wires are packed in there extremely tight. You can't even fit your pinky finger into the boot. I had to pull like hell to just get the one wire through it. ;)
the crossovers should be safe in a closed plastic bag.

I put Infinity components in my front doors and with the stock head unit I couldn't even tell I had made a change. But when I got my digital interface installed and ditched the stock radio for a pioneer head unit I was really impressed with the sound quality. I have tried to use a line Output Converter with my stock head unit before it just doesn't stand up to the quality you get with a aftermarket head unit my subs sounded just plain horrible. I even have the bose sound in my car with the factory amplifier and got the amp bypass kit that metra sells and was able to amp all my speakers in the car without running new wires, the kit connected in the trunk it was very easy to run a aftermarket amplifier to all the speakers . In my opinion ditch the stock head unit and go with a metra digital interface they work wonders with the ribbon cable head units I love mine they make the overall car stereo sound outstanding. :lol: : :greenlaugh:

alright, I swapped the pioneer in just to test and see how the speakers sound and the ear piercing highs are still there, but there is absolutely no distortion now. You can crank them and there is absolutely no problem with bass, even with the headunit's bass set on max. I think I'm going to tear the door panels apart *again* and set the tweeter to -4 DB on the crossover. There are options for -4, 0, and +3 DB for the tweeter. It's on 0 DB gain right now. I think that'll be going down to -4 for now. ;) I would really like to give these speakers some more 'room' to breath because that water sheild is directly behind the speaker.. I'm sure these speakers require more air than what they're getting. :cry: I don't want to take the chance of introducing water into the car though by cutting a hole in that water sheild. :x

best thing to do is to use a wire hanger fish it in the hole and tape it and the pull it through and you have the wire now

i love piercing highs... mine feel like your ears are going to bleed on some songs.. I LOVE IT
