A few tips, tricks, and techniques replacing S10/ Blazer factory speakers
Replaced the factory speakers in my Sons' S10. When I pulled the dash to replace the heater core I noticed the OEM speakers had started to disintegrate from age/ sun, etc.
A few notes.
On a S10 with front door mounted speakers, the speaker size is 6 3/4. Unless you plan on reusing the original speaker mounts, the replacement size should be 6 1/2. I bought 6 3/4, and had to order 6 1/2. The 6 3/4 do not fit with the aftermarket mount.
The kits needed for the conversion from OEM to aftermarket speakers are:
Metra 82-3043 GM *-10 Sonoma Adapters 1994, under $11 on Amazon, money well spent. I recommend drilling a hole in the top to run the speaker wire through- I guess you could run the wire against the metal door panel but I could see a possible rubbing over time and stripping the wire shield. I also mounted the connector to the wiring harness outside the speaker adapter. The factory mounts thee connector inside, but if you ever want to disconnect the speaker ir pull the harness, you have to remove the speaker. Mounting it outside eliminates any hassle and also lets you visually know the connection is being made (when inside the speaker adapter you cant see if it is properly plugged in).
The kit needed to convert the speaker connection from oem to direct connect is Metra 72-4568 Speaker Harness for Select GM Vehicles. Note METRA sells two types of these harnesses ONLY THE ABOVE PART NUMBER WORKS- don't ask me how I know. Also, one of the connectors was defective at the plug to the speaker, easy fix- I just cut off the end and soldered it to the speaker. No impact on future disassemble as the main disconnection point is at the harness- soldiering is actually a preferred connection method.
Below are some pictures. A few notes, the old speaker mounts are riveted to the door, a simple drilling takes them quickly out. The Metra mount kit comes with nice big Phillip sheet metal screws to replace the rivets. The OEM dash speaker covers craved when trying to remove them- I bought new OEM replacements on Amazon, all that is need is too know the three interior colors offered on the S10.
The speakers I went with that fit just fine:
door- Pioneer - TS-G1644R
dash- JVC CSV4627
The first picture is a 6 1/2 pioneer speaker, 6 3/4 Rockford and a 6 3/4 OEM
