i believe with the Newer Delcos you need the VIN and then you can retreive the code thru the dealer, some have found a phone number that has worked for them

the HU does not connect or have any effect on the DIC

that is not necessarily true Pat, everything electrical in the interior of the 2000+* all act in harmony through the data-bus system, its a big pain in the A$$

This is taken directly from the sevice manual...

"When installing a radio from another vehicle of the same platform, clear the VIN data using the scantool"

The radio will then log the VIN that is recorded in the DIC as its respective vehicle

no, the DIC does not complain, however, you loose your door/headlight chimes. If a OEM style radio is plugged in with a VIN that does not match the VIN in the DIC the radio will not power on. By resetting the radios logged VIN with a Tech2, upon the next power-up the radio records the VIN of the new DIC.

The data bus system is integral and matters. This will probably need to be unlocked by a dealer. Do you have the vin of the car the radio came out of?

according to the service manual, the new radio just needs to be cleared of its stored VIN through a tech2 scontool. it will then acquire the VIN of your vehicle when powered back on

I just want to unlock the original from my car.

I've heard stories of older theftlock radios having to be unlocked by a dealer if a cars battery goes dead. I'm going to be replacing my battery in the near future, and don't want to have to deal with a locked radio (if this could even happen)

i had my radio out of my car for over a month and pluged it back in and it worked flawlessly.
The new system is completely different than the Theftlock of yesteryear. Your radio never actually locks itself. If your battery dies it will still work. The only function of the lock feature makes it so it cannot be used in another vehicle without being reset by a scantool, it will always work in your vehicle, and you can not "unlock" it because it never really "locks"

the VIN of your vehicle is stored in the radio in a non-sensitive area, presumably in an eeprom chip.
"Each time the ignition cycles from OFF to ON, the radio recieves VIN data over the class 2 communications circuit. If the VIN data stored in the radio memory matches the VIN data recieved over the class 2 communications circuit, the radio operates normally"
