'02 SSEi Head Unit Question

Hello, I'm new to this and wanted to post a question about my stock CD/cassette head unit.
Recently, the light bulb that illuminates the LCD screen apparently burnt out. It is barely visible at night, but not bright enough to read during the day. The local GM service departments have told me it will be around $250 to replace or service that head unit.

My question is, if I'm going to be putting a different head unit in here, can I go with one from a later model Bonney that would have XM Satellite tuner integrated in it? I realize I will have to install the XM antennae if this is feazible and I also want to keep OEM equipment so I can keep the steering wheel controls and the Heads Up Display functioning.

Has anyone ever installed a later model OEM head unit in an earlier model? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

BonneMeMN,

Thanks a bunch for those links! I called the people at corvetteradios.com and they were quite knowledgable about the model of my head unit. He knew exactly how many bulbs it took for my display and gave me some pointers on installing them. It might get a little tricky with desoldering the old ones, but we'll see.

Thanks again!
