No overdrive - sometimes
I did a search on not having overdrive, but I do not think it is the 4th clutch hub problem. The transmission will not shift into overdrive once in a while. Usually it is just for the trip until the car is shut off and restarted. The longest it has gone is a few days. Then it starts working fine again. Any ideas? Thanks,

It would help to know what year and trim level you have. Believe it or not, it has a bearing on what advice we would give you.
Can you put your year and trim level in your signature by editing your profile in the link at the top right of the page?
In the meantime, can you describe the look, odor, and level on the dipstick of your trans fluid after driving? How many miles on the trans? Does it do it more when hot than cold?

Can you put that information in your signature? What about the other questions I asked?
(btw, I found this in 92-99 this morning, which is why I asked. 92-99 cars span two different generations of transmissions in 4 different varieties, thanks to whoever moved this when the year was identified).

Trans has 102k on it. The fluid looks good, but it was just flushed about 6k or 7k miles ago. It does not smell burnt either. It'* only done it a few times. The first time was last Feb and it did it for about a day. It was about 5 deg F here, so I attributed it to that as after it spent the night in the heated garage it was fine. A couple months later it did it again, but as soon as the car was shut off and restarted it was fine. Then it did it again about two weeks ago for about 6 hours and then was fine. Now it has done it again, but it has been 3 days.
No check engine light either.

Is your engine at normal operating temp when experiencing trouble. I say this because my bonne use to do this. I found out it was a bad termostat. OD would not kick in reliably until engine reached at least 150 F.

It ended up being the 4th gear clutch hub. Has anybody changed a transmission on one of these and could give me some advice on whether or not it is worth attempting? I can't justify coughing up $4400 (probably 80% of what the car is worth) to the dealer for a new transmission when I can buy a remaned unit with a 12k/1 year warranty for $1100.
