Just a small storage area, business cards, keys, stuff like that.

if yours was an SSEi that is where the heads up display control goes

Steve is correct. That is where the control panel for the HUD goes. Some engineer decided to put a small tray there rather than a flat surface cover. He probably packaged the largest tray that would fit, and it is more useful than a cover.

Put your change in their for coffee, tolls, etc.

I honestly have never used mine. Once I get all the new wiring in though I'll have a HUD control panel there anyways. Seems about stupid though that they couldn't put like a spring loaded change holder there or something.

When I first got my car I was puzzled by this also. The use that I found to be the best, mine is actually really loose, so i can remove it very easily. So lets say I want to hide something I pull it out and stick something behind it and then put the tray back in. There isn't really much room back there but if you wanted to hide something small you can. Just saying

And now that you have notified the world wide web of where your hiding spot is, the list of items you may want to keep there just got a lot smaller.
