Default ECU issues

I just recently bought my 2004 SE and last week while I was driving it home the check engine light came on briefly and immediately turned back off. I didn't think anything of it, since it shut off right away. The next day while I was driving, the oil light came on- this time the light stayed on for a few minutes before shutting off.

I I thought I had an oil leak, checked the oil- and the level was fine. It was due for an oil change anyway, so I thought maybe something else was causing the problem. The day following that while I was driving the gauges said I was overheating. I started to panic, parked the car- called a tow truck, had it towed to the garage.

The mechanic calls back and says my car isn't overheating at all- changed my oil and fluids etc. He told me the problem is a faulty ECU and that he would need to install a new one. He gave me a quote of 300$.

So, my question is, (since I'm not the most knowledgable about mechanics) Does that sound like a reasonable quote? Could this also be the reason why my tire pressure light keeps comming on and having me check my tire pressure like a maniac?! Bah!

I told the mechanic to go ahead and order the part- the stress is killing me! Of all things to go wrong- I guess it would have to be the thing that tells me something is wrong..

It can happen. It could also be a cluster. The mechanic should have tried triggering the varous items with a scan tool and found it to be the PCM.

Agreed. He should have checked connectors for signal voltage yada yada yada before condeming the PCM. And 300 bucks doesnt sound bad at all for that repair.

i wanna ask you something, has the car been acting up? random backfires, Stalling, shuddering? any of the sort? If not, i wouldnt say it was the ECU. Like Boost said, maybe its just a bad cluster. its rare, but not impossible.

Thanks for the responses. No, it hasn't given me any other issues at all whatsoever. That does make me pretty nervous though- I think I will give him a call about the PCM though, I don't want him charging me for a part I may not need.
