"wabble" in steering?
 

I have a 2002 SSEi. I noticed lately an occasional "wabble" in the steering wheel. This does not happen alll the time. It feels like the steering wheel is encountering some resistince, and moving slightly front to back just for a fraction of a second or few degrees.

Any ideas on what this might be?

I have a stock suspension, with 18X8.5 wheels and 245/45 rubber. I have had the wheels/tire for 10K miles, and this just started happening.

My other mods are drive train, 3.25 pulley, tog headers, thrasher CAI, and SLP rockers/pushrods. Once again, all these have been on for a while, with no problems.

I do like to take turns hard, dip into the boost, and toss the car around a bit. Any chance something is lose or broken?

The car has 15K miles on it.

No wabble in my 01 ssei but I do hear a rubbing noise in the steering assebly somewhere at parkinglot speed turns and in and out of spaces, don't hear it any other time. My advice streetracer is to take it in like I'm going to do. Both of our cars are still under factory warrenty, drop off the keys and say fix it! :)

Couple of questions for you. I envy your mods first off, Next on my list are TOG headers and intense 1.9 rockers and pushrods. If you don't mind, how much did you pay for install on these? How does it drive now? Raped ape? Can't wait for these mods on my 01 ssei with 21K. Have you Autotaped it? any KR? What year oil tube did you order?

The TOG headers cost my $300 to install.

My rockers are SLP 1.8 roller rockers with lightweight pushrods. The parts and installation can to $600 dollars. This was done at SLP's installation center here in NJ.


The car is very quick!

I have great low end torque and it pulls all the way to redline. I have an autotap, and did a bunch of runs a few weeks back. The temperatures were in the high 80s to mid 90s with high humidity. I was seeing intake temps between 100 and 140 degrees.

I had zero knock sensor count at WOT in all gears and up to like 5800RPM. The knock sensor count shows how many instanses of knock (false or real) the PCM detects.

However, I did get spikes of KR (0-3 degrees) often right at throttle let off, or upshifts. I would get a spike and have it actually go down as RPM and boost increased.

I think this was the PCM trying to protect engine and tranny, because there was KR with no actual knock detected.

I was also like to know if you went to off road pipe of high flow cat. This is going to be one of my next mod as soon as I can get in touch with ASE to get my ECM done. Is the rest of the exhaust factory and is it any louder than with the manifolds alone.

...there is a steering voluntary recall on '00 -'03 Bonnevilles,....the intermediate steering shaft(there's an upper,a lower,and an intermediate shaft)has universal joints that are 'whacked' and start grinding( you feel it most when you are taking off from a stop,and turn the wheel right or left[like going around a corner]and when you go over some sharp bumps/ruts/railroad tracks you hear/feel a 'chucking' through the steering wheel).My wife's '01 BonnevilleSE(20,000 miles)was taken in for the problem...and they used a 'special'lubricating grease-kit,supposedly made/devised just for this problem[I sarcastically referred to it as Magic Grease when the Service Manager said that a special expensive kind of grease was going to eliminate the 'play' in a bad U-joint],.......the grease worked for about a year...and it's doing the same thing again.........THIS time they are replacing the shaft.....goes in the garage this Friday.[.....BTW,I'm starting to feel the same deal in the '00 SSEi that I bought in July(38,000 miles on the clock)... :x ]

You guys sure you don't have a warped rotor or loose caliper?

naw, it's a different type of wabble. it feels like a loose steering component, the steering wheel actually will wobble to the bumps but is actually tight. (can't shift it up/down left/right)

Mine is just a rubbing noise, could be grinding noise actually at very SLOW speeds, dosen't do it ever day either. I brought it to the dealer last week for it and they couldn't re-creat the noise so they didn't fix anything, I even drove it and couldn't get it to happen, going to try again this week. :?

my car does something similar. Every 1/4 turn it does a clunk, and sometimes it will make a rubbing sound. I didn't think to look up a recall for it...i will now though!
