Not a box, but the filter has a frame around it that guides the filter into place. Tabs on the side of the frame interface with slots in the cowl. And it'* not an A/C filter. Its a cabin air filter and filters all outside HVAC air, not just A/C.

Vendo asks a great question, I have seen some of the filters have no frame around them, and then you have to do that 90 degree plus bend for the last 20% of the filter. Akward design.

Several brands available on rockauto.com. You can buy them with, and without, the frames. For example:

Look for "cabin air filter" under "heating and air conditioning".

Buy one like the link I provided. It has the frame around it.

My 2004 Bonne SLE had no cabin filter, from what I could find out it was a dealer-installed option. I picked up a Wix cabin filter with frame off of Amazon for about $12.50. I had to loosen the cowl trim in order to install the filter/frame combination, I've seen pictures of a cabin filter in the housing without the frame, think that is worthless as the filter will not seal properly without the frame.

2004 Bonneville SLE, comfort & economy in a large sedan; original owner of a 208k mile 71 SS350 Chevelle, 4-speed, 3.31 12 bolt, not so economical, but a blast to drive.
